Operations and Controls Legal seeks an adaptable attorney to join a legal team supporting multiple operations areas and functions including:

  • oversight of law firms engaged on default matters;
  • management of escalations related to subpoena responses, court orders, levies and other legal papers to ensure compliance and mitigate risk of loss;
  • end to end support of default servicing, including collections, collections litigation, bankruptcy, replevin and deceased handling;
  • analysis of complex regulatory requirements and emerging areas of law; and
  • support for innovative technologies.

The Consumer and Community Bank's (CCB) Operations & Controls Legal Team (OCL) is responsible for providing legal services to CCB Operations, including collections litigation, collections and recovery, bankruptcy, sworn document processes, tax reporting, court order and subpoena processing, escalated customer complaints and third party oversight of consumer default law firms. The team is also responsible for providing regulatory advice to all CCB businesses and control partners on key consumer protection statutes such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act, Telephone Consumer Protection Act, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Unfair/Deceptive Acts and Practices. In addition, the team monitors state and federal law and regulatory developments and leads CCB's participation in the firmwide Office of Legal Obligations and Legal Regulatory Change Management processes. The CCB OCL team also provides legal support to CCB's Audit, Compliance, Risk and Controls functions and various firm wide regulatory initiatives, such as the Service members Civil Relief Act and the Remediation Center of Excellence.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducting legal analysis and research on a myriad of legal issues impacting the business;
  • Directly overseeing and solving escalated issues and incidents from operations areas and control partners;
  • Monitoring key performance metrics relating to the quality of legal work;
  • Conducting attorney interviews and completing performance assessments;
  • Monitoring emerging legal risks and legal requirements changes to identify potential impacts to processes and operations;
  • Preparing status reports for management and stakeholders;
  • Providing support to strategic initiatives and special projects; Maintaining operational integrity of the team through document and version control activities;
  • Drafting legal guidance and leading meeting discussions; Acting as a trusted advisor and partnering with legal peers, the business and other control functions to implement consistent and strategically-sound practices and procedures - as well as assess and enhance existing procedures; Assisting in reviews and revisions of policies and procedures; Managing and interacting with outside counsel on matters in all jurisdictions across the country, including providing strategic direction; and Driving support for legal department priorities.


Qualifications:

Candidates should possess, at a minimum:

  • Law Degree (JD or educational equivalent required);
    • Prior to commencing employment, attorney candidates must be in compliance with all relevant licensing requirements including the requirements of the jurisdiction where the role will be located;
  • 2 or more years of experience practicing post receipt of JD or educational equivalent;
  • Consumer financial services or third-party oversight experience preferred, but not required;
    • Experience navigating regulatory requirements and/or federal, state and local rules a plus
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as active listening;
  • Ability to lead in a complex changing environment and execute strategic priorities and objectives;
  • Demonstrated end to end ownership of issues;
  • Desire to learn and understand processes, as well as drive process improvement and efficiency;
  • Ability to recognize issues that may require escalation and special handling;
  • Strong analytical skills and high proficiency in logic-based reasoning;
  • Team player who can collaborate within the Legal Department, control partners, across business and at all seniority levels;
  • Excellent legal research and writing skills;
  • Displays a high degree of initiative, self-direction and ability to work independently;
  • Exercises decisive, sound judgment in a very fast-paced environment;
  • Adapts to change easily and exhibits a growth mindset;
  • Strong sense of honesty and ethics as an officer of the court and a representative protecting the reputation of JPMC;
  • All candidates for roles in the Legal department must successfully complete a conflicts of interest clearance review prior to commencement of employment.


Preferred Skills:

  • Knowledge of the U.S. litigation process; familiarity with U.S. legal pleadings.
  • Technological mindset and/or background is a plus.
  • Experience with a wide range of legal escalations and/or litigation matters with financial risk of loss or exposure.
  • Background in document review.
  • Experience in client relations.
  • Experience in project management.
  • In-house experience a plus.


The location of this position is in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
