Position Summary

Build effective working relationships with key community organizations, local government, and customers to partner on wildfire mitigation work such as public safety power shutoff procedures and outreach activities to educate, engage, and protect communities from wildfire threats.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Serve as a community liaison to represent Xcel Energy in the community at the local and state level to discuss the impacts for wildfire mitigation plans with fire agencies, government leaders, and customers. Discuss emergency preparedness plans to ensure strong collaboration between Xcel Energy and the community in the ability to prevent as well as respond to a wildfire event. Partner closely with OpCo Community Relations Managers.
  • Collaborate with community response agencies during a wildfire event to support public safety and support emergency response. Assist communities with the development CWPPs (Colorado Wildfire Preparedness Plans). Provide follow-up support to the community after a wildfire-related event.
  • Partner with customers (residential and commercial) to discuss public safety power shut-off procedures and emergency preparedness. Educate the customers on preparation for public safety power shut-off events and the procedures that will be used. Communicate plans and updates to restore service after a wildfire related outage.
  • Advocate for the company's wildfire mitigation positions with internal and external stakeholders. Develop key messages around wildfire mitigation and emergency preparedness for presentations to internal and external stakeholders. Create public awareness campaigns as well as internal and external training related to the company's Wildfire Mitigation strategies. Partner with Corporate Communications, as needed, on communication channels to distribute messages.
  • Provide close communication to partner with communities when wildfire mitigation grid hardening work, vegetation management work, or other efforts may temporarily impact them.


Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Communication, Public Relations, Business, Environmental Science, a social science, or other related field.
  • Minimum of eight years of experience related to community relations/public affairs or communications background.
  • Previous wildfire mitigation or emergency management experience preferred. Experience working with a utility, government agency, or other regulated industry preferred.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work on complex issues in a public setting.
  • Must be proficient in use MS Office Suite.
  • Travel up to 30% of the time may be required, including local travel and travel to company locations.

Non-Bargaining

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $105,600.00 to $150,000.00 per year
