Job Purpose

Band: C Journalist (Sport)
Contract: 10 Month fixed term contract (part time 14 hours per week)
Location: Dunstable

Salary: £26,710 - £28,000 (Full time) depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights. As this is a part time role (2 days a week) the part time salary will vary.

Any offer of employment with the BBC will be conditional upon you having the right to work in UK.

Job Purpose
BBC Three Counties Radio is an exciting multimedia newsroom serving a large but disparate audience in Beds, Herts and Bucks. It is among the most challenging places to cut through the crowded media market place but we consistently punch above our weight.
We have 5 professional football teams, 2 second tier rugby teams and numerous other sports teams in our patch. We are looking for a motivated, innovative sport journalist to help shape our content. We want a driven and passionate person who is keen to reach new audiences with the sport news that matters to them. You'll know what audiences expect from different platforms, how to cover a press conference, compile and read a sport bulletin and how to turn around a multi-platform story under a tight deadline. There will be some weekend and evening work.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

You will be creative and accurate with good writing and technical skills. You will also be responsible for liaising with presenters and ensuring linear content is shared and reflects our multi-platform approach to all local content serving all audiences. Responsibilities would include all or some of the following:

• Writing and producing programmes/podcasts/bulletins including our Saturday sports show, Midweek sport shows, Friday Night Sport and the Non League Show.
• Delivering high quality and locally focussed afternoon sports bulletins.
• A desire to present sport programmes
• The opportunity to commentate on our five professional football teams.
• Helping with the administrative aspects of sports broadcasting at a large station with five football teams and a host of freelancers/commentators/contributors.
• Expanding our sport social media presence so having a good understanding of digital platforms and how we can promote our content even better.
• Being part of a team that produces vibrant content in a live, pressurised environment, across sport output and other daily programmes.
• Helping to make our sport output even more engaging through creative storytelling in a variety of different ways and across different platforms.
• The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate good editorial judgement and solid journalistic skills.
• The ability to work, at times, unsupervised and require initiative and creativity with the high editorial, journalism and production values expected by the BBC.
• Deliver to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
• You need to be adept at technology, picking up new skills and adapting to the changing demands of a digital first working environment.

Knowledge, Skills, Training & Experience

• A self-starter who knows a good local story and how to find it, based upon a clear understanding of the BBC's distinctive news and sport agenda.
• Understands how a team works effectively.
• Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
• Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.
• Effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
• Demonstrates a creative approach to story-telling.
• The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
• An understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to broadcasting
• Ability to use technology as required, in order to gather material for broadcast.

Job Impact

Decision making high level of responsibility and decision making; able to operate alone. No managerial responsibility. May be informally supported by junior staff i.e. Researchers, Coordinators and Assistants. Scope Covers a wide range of journalism activity, producing sports news content and supporting the production and presentation of programming.
