Your role

We are looking for a reporter who is motivated to serve CBC audiences in Waterloo region. The successful candidate is a strong critical thinker with a track record of digging up news. This person has a passion for the craft of storytelling on multiple platforms: digital, radio and video, and a track record of experimenting with new formats and storytelling techniques.

The successful candidate will be an exceptional writer and an experienced chaser of original and enterprise stories. You will explore beyond the obvious and bring stories to light that reflect the full range of diversity in this complex region.

You will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. You will further our original, enterprise and investigative storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout the region.

You confidently use sources including documents, data, access to information laws, and confidential and community sources to uncover news. You are a strong and articulate storyteller who will report live into the local radio programs and news. You seek out ways to share stories from Kitchener-Waterloo with other local and network shows.

As the industry shifts, local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You understand the makeup of the region and its diverse population, and you reflect our communities in the stories you tell. You are a champion of amplifying the voices of under-represented people and communities in your storytelling.

You are a collaborative member of the team. You have proven your commitment to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture.

Your work will be governed by the CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices (JSP).

You may be assigned to a work shift that includes occasional or regular 7 am starts or 7 pm finishes, or an ongoing/rotating weekend shift.

Key tasks:
  • Produce journalistic content for a variety of platforms including digital, radio and video.
  • Take quality photographs and video in a variety of situations, as needed.
  • Gather high-quality audio.
  • Edit material for use on all platforms.
  • Post content to our website.
  • Monitor developing news through a variety of sources.
  • Develop and maintain contacts with sources to ensure current knowledge of issues and events.
  • Arrange for, and conduct interviews.
  • Contribute story ideas and creative treatments.
  • On occasion, vet or edit stories and scripts written by colleagues.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:
  • A university degree or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent experience writing news for a major professional online publication or broadcaster.
  • Experience in determining potential legal issues and journalistic policy violations and ability to act on them.
  • Thorough understanding of the CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices .
  • Proven ability to write with appropriate flow, clarity and brevity, and to write/edit engaging headlines, photo captions and teaser summaries.
  • Track record of generating original and innovative stories with creative treatments, including visual storytelling.
  • Experience handling breaking news and quick turnarounds.
  • A team player who is willing to work cooperatively with producers and colleagues in story development and vetting.
  • Working knowledge of the diverse communities in and around Kitchener-Waterloo.
  • Performance skills including strong presentation style and a good voice for broadcast.
  • An aptitude for working with a variety of digital tools. Strong photography and video skills is an asset.
  • Flexibility with hours of work (including evenings and weekends) and willingness to learn and take on new tasks across all CBC's platforms.
  • Solid news judgement and ability to work effectively under newsroom deadline pressure.
  • Proven ability to work independently on stories. Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • A valid driver's licence of G or better level.
