Job Introduction

At BBC Monitoring, we track, translate, summarise and analyse local media sources to offer insight and make sense of what is happening on the ground around the world. Our international perspective means we keep across broadcast, press and social/digital media sources in multiple languages, especially where reliable news and information are in short supply, or where the BBC has no presence in country. Our extensive operation enables us to provide reliable coverage of political, economic, security and media news. Our round-the-clock monitoring of TV, radio, press, digital media and news agencies is also provided to a wide range of users, including commercial clients.

Main Responsibilities

  • To produce engaging, accurate and fluent content in English in a variety of formats, on insights gained through the monitoring of TV, radio, newspapers, online/digital and social media relevant to Latin America & the Caribbean.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the news and current affairs of Latin America & the Caribbean as well as the wider regional and international context.
  • Continually develop expert knowledge of all media types, ensuring this source context features in output.
  • Come up with original ideas and creative treatments for ongoing and emerging narratives, integrating video, images, graphics and data into BBCM's products and identifying new ways to deliver content relevant to BBCM users.
  • Act as a point of reference on Latin America & the Caribbean both internally and for all BBCM users.
  • Share BBCM's insights directly with BBC audiences, including through broadcast interviews.
  • Ensure all output is consistent with the BBC editorial guidelines.
  • Continually develop self and others and work collaboratively with colleagues in BBC Monitoring and across the BBC.


Are you the right candidate?

Essential Requirements
  • Complete fluency in Spanish - written and spoken, including colloquial. Portuguese (for Brazil) would also be useful.
  • Ability to write about developments in excellent idiomatic English
  • Experience as a journalist with demonstrable news judgement
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of the news and current affairs of Latin America & the Caribbean and the wider region
  • In-depth subject matter expertise on this region's media environment, including tracking breaking news and emerging trends on social media
  • Ability to write about news developments in a way that is engaging and relevant for the intended audience
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills Flexible and comfortable to work remotely with a dispersed team


Desirable:
  • A good knowledge of the Central American region and counter-narcotics themes and trends would be useful.
  • Regional languages, such as: Haitian Creole, French and/or Portuguese, in addition to Spanish
  • A wider knowledge of regional/international geopolitics
  • An understanding of BBCM's user groups and target markets
  • Broadcast experience
  • Content creation and video shoot/edit skills
  • Digital skills (e.g. analysis of social media content or data analysis)

Contract: This employment is offered on an "at will" basis with an anticipated duration of 12 months
