Apple is looking for a world-class engineer to develop PVD equipment and processes to deposit thin films for advanced technology development! This engineering role will be responsible for design and development of thin film deposition equipment and process that meets key program goals. This includes sputter deposition of various thin films (metals, oxides) using a range of power configurations (DC, AC, RF) on different equipment platforms (in-line, drum). The role requires development and simulation of a production-intent manufacturing process on pilot scale equipment while realizing key cell performance and economic targets. This individual will work with a scale partner in developing production-scale equipment design and readiness for procurement to realize first low volume production line.

Key Qualifications

  • Establishing vision, collaboratively developing strategies and tactical plans leveraging partnership with EPM lead, and leading an empowered team to realize program goals.
  • Drive establishment of critical-to-quality metrics, process sensitivity analysis through Design of Experiments (DOEs), and creation of standard operating procedures (SOPs). Establish comprehensive process control metrics on all equipment.
  • Hands on experience in design and development of power delivery, sputtering sources, substrate carriers, and receivers.
  • Promote mastery of equipment and process designs through first principles engineering and correlation / causation relationships.
  • Develop equipment specifications for final tool selection, participate in vendor selection and provide technical guidance during tool development and factory acceptance prior to shipment. Oversee equipment performance including: installation, commissioning and set-up.
  • Collaborate and communicate with peer engineering leads in other functional areas to ensure alignment on projects and priorities. Proactively identify gaps and work efficiently to close them.
  • Contribute to the design and operating specification of pilot line equipment to enable capability of supporting advanced designs, materials and process development initiatives. This includes optimization, trouble shooting and corrective action implementation.
  • Build relationships with and transfer knowledge to development and scale partner for thin film deposition. Ensure partner is able to operate autonomously.
  • Commit to building culture that aligns with Apple's core principles of collaborative and inclusive teamwork, innovation that creates value, and a focus on results over activities.
