The Opportunity

CBC Radio is looking for a Senior Producer to help lead our flagship evening radio current affairs program, As It Happens .

This is a full-time position based in Toronto. Please note: This is a one year contract to cover a leave on the program.

Your role

As Senior Producer with As It Happens you are a leader who helps shape our nightly program that airs live on radio across Canada and several markets in the US, and as an on-demand podcast. Reporting to the Executive Producer, you work in tandem to inspire and nurture the team, leading the assignment and development of content both on the air and across CBC's digital platforms.

You must be a motivated, inspired leader with innovative and creative ideas for continuing the evolution of this long-running Canadian program and its team at a pivotal moment in its history.

You will build on the strengths and reputation of As It Happens -- its excellence in landing the top interviews of the day with principals at the heart of the story, as well as a full range of unique, curious and sometimes quirky characters from around the world that engage our loyal listeners and attract new audiences particularly in the 30-49 demographic. You will prioritize getting the mix of stories right, supporting high-level chase and writing skills among the staff and ensuring AIH remains must-listen audio, on all platforms.

You will constantly strive to ensure As It Happens is relevant, reflective and has tonal range. You have well-developed leadership and communication skills and the ability to mentor and direct staff as well as develop and implement feedback plans for programming teams. You demonstrate a high level of creative thinking, as well as the ability to originate and develop innovative programs and/or production concepts. You fully understand and are comfortable upholding the principles of the CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices.

You will help ensure that our programming reflects contemporary Canada by creating and driving program initiatives that help CBC meet its strategic goals and better understand and reflect the communities we serve.

You live and promote an inclusive and respectful work culture. You have a deep appreciation of the importance of representation in public broadcasting.

  • Substantial experience vetting, editing, fact-checking and shaping content
  • Superior leadership, coaching and mentoring skills, with the demonstrated ability to motivate teams and encourage creativity
  • Ability to assign, manage staff, and coordinate and collaborate with other departments in a productive manner, and mediate disputes as they arise.
  • High-level knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
