The AMC- Delaware Valley Chapter is hosting a work day on May 8 to conserve nature and protect the Appalachian Trail Experience. The work is planned between Smith Gap and Katellen Trail Parking area. The hike distance for the day's planned activities is approximately 4.5 miles. Planned activities include trail maintenance and natural resource conservation work. We will be removing blowdowns, fire rings, Japanese barberries (thorny green briars) and poison ivy along the Trail. Hand tools commonly used on the trail are handsaw, hand shears and branch shears. No experience required. Tools and training will be provided. Participants should wear long pants, sturdy boots, and pack plenty of water, snack and a lunch. Please also plan to bring sturdy gloves; barberries are sharp, so thick gloves are recommended. Bring a long-sleeve shirt to prevent exposure to ornery plants. If you hike, this is a fun way to 'pay-it-forward,' and you're guaranteed a rewarding day learning new skills and meeting new friends. You'll be giving nature a helping hand by helping tackle the most common invasive species found in this area so that super special native plants can thrive. Participants may be asked to use your vehicle during the car shuttling at the beginning of or end of the activity. |
