Duties

Start your Accounting career here with us at the U.S. Coast Guard's Finance Center, Chesapeake, VA. The Finance Center is the world-wide finance and accounting office for the Coast Guard.

The position's primary purpose is to perform developmental accounting assignments that involve the application of accounting principles, procedures, processes, regulations and reference material fundamental to the technical aspects of governmental accounting.

Being a CG civilian makes you a valuable member of the CG team. Typical work assignments include:

The intern will receive a series of rotating assignments involving different divisions and branches. Examples of typical assignments are as follows:
  • Examining a variety of financial transactions and reports for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with acceptable standards.
  • Reviewing and processing invoices for payment.
  • Performing a variety of assignments involving accounts receivable including billing, dunning, aging, and referral to collection agents.
  • Performing reconciliation of general ledger control accounts and subsidiary ledgers. Research discrepancies and make necessary adjustment entries.

Qualifications

In order to be eligible for a Pathways Intern Program appointment, you must be a student enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a full or part-time degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking student in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school. Selected candidates will be required to submit a copy of their transcripts and a letter of enrollment or acceptance for enrollment prior to appointment.

Any of the following educational institutions or curricula that have been accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education:

• Technical or vocational school

• 2-year or 4-year college or university

• Graduate or Professional school (e.g., law school, medical school)

A certificate program is post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational or business school curriculum.

In addition to the eligibility requirement:

You qualify for the GS-03 level (starting salary $30,386) if you are a current student (attending an accredited educational institution recognized by the Department of Education) and have completed 1 year of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree.

You qualify for the GS-04 level (starting salary $34,109) if you are a current student (attending an accredited educational institution recognized by the Department of Education) and have two years of education above high school or an associate's degree.

The required education must lead to a bachelor's degree with specialization in or directly related to the field of accounting (i.e. business administration, finance, or public administration) in which the intern will receive training on the job.

Additionally, to be eligible for a Pathways Internship you must be enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in a degree program or qualified certificate program in a qualifying educational institution on a full or half time basis.

Upon completion of all academic and program requirements, selectees may be non-competitively converted to a term or permanent position in the competitive service.

NOTE: To be eligible for conversion, you must complete 640 hours of work (if you meet all required criteria, up to 320 hours may be waived if: (1) you complete 320 hours of career-related work experience under an Internship Program appointment and have demonstrated high potential by outstanding academic achievement and exceptional job performance; or (2) you complete comparable non-federal internship experience in a field or functional area related to your target position).

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule, C, Non-career SES or Presidential Appointee employee in the Executive Branch, you must disclose this information to the Human Resources Office.
