Duties

  • Transport and assist scientific parties in locating intended sites in order that research can be conducted. Loads and off-loads supplies and equipment needed to conduct research.
  • Oversee and manage all aspects of operations, such as proper navigational operations, safety of cargo and personnel, proper loading of cargo, determinations as to whether or not to operate in certain sea and/or weather conditions.
  • Make periodic inspections of vessel and recommends repairs to be made during annual yard haul-outs. Supervises and inspects yard work while in progress.
  • Maintain vessel in good, safe operating condition by making minor adjustments and repairs as needed. Purchases fuel, oil and all parts and supplies as necessary for vessel operations.
  • Pick up incoming supplies and equipment and is responsible for delivery to and loading aboard vessel. Responsible for off-loading of supplies and equipment from vessel at destination points.

  • You will be required to submit to a drug test and receive a negative drug test result prior to appointment. In addition, this position is subject to random testing for illegal drug use.
  • Must possess and maintain a U.S. Coast Guard 100 ton Marine License.
  • You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued driver's license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued driver's license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. Please indicate in your application whether you possess a valid State driver's license.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime work.
  • You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 10 to 15 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.
  • You will be required to complete a Confidential Financial Disclosure Report, OGE-450 on an annual basis.

Physical Demands: The work involves prolonged standing and constant mental application and alertness; is subject to strains, bruises, cuts, mashed hands and feet, bums, falling overboard, drowning, and other marine traffic hazards; during poor weather conditions, anchor watches must be used to prevent hazards to vessel or passengers; incumbent may sustain long periods without sleep; combination of sea and weather conditions can cause susceptibility to motion sickness; lifting, loading and unloading supplies and cargo required incumbent to be in good physical shape; SCUBA operations require good physical conditions and an annual physical examination; and the incumbent exerts moderate to heavy physical effort lifting items weighing up to 100 pounds.

Working Conditions: The incumbent will be exposed to the prevailing weather for long periods of time including hot sun, fog, rain, spray, wind, and heavy sea spray. Conditions and routine day to-day situations may arise that may require the incumbent to work in cramped, dirty, slippery quarters, compartments and loud engine rooms. The incumbent may be exposed to possible falls on deck and the possibility of falling overboard. The incumbent will be required to work while the vessel is under way with decks awash and the vessel in storm-tossed sea conditions and must meet and maintain NPS-4 physical condition standards for scuba diving operations.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
