Duties
  • This position serves as a Maintenance Worker for the Canyon Country District.
  • Conducts maintenance of recreation and administrative sites including cleaning facilities, routine site landscaping work, applying herbicide to clear weeds and restoring native vegetation, installs and operates supplemental watering systems.
  • Performs corrective maintenance for buildings and facilities such as replacement and repair of buildings, water and sewer/septic systems and other facilities and infrastructure.
  • Assists with construction and installation of facilities at recreation sites such as campgrounds, trailheads, parking areas, group shelters and toilet structures.
  • Operates and assists in maintaining various types of equipment including heavy duty 4X4 pickups, forklifts, skid-steer loaders with bucket, augers, mixer attachments and a hydraulic lift dump trailer.
  • Assists with construction and installation of information kiosks, information boards, concrete walkways, tent pads, pipe safes, fire grills, picnic tables and signs.
  • Performs periodic maintenance of approximately 40 wildlife water developments such as turning systems on and off at specific times, cleaning gutters, removing weeds and making minor repairs.

OPM Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining your qualifications. There is no specific length of training or experience required; however, you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in the resume materials, that you possess the skill level that has equipped you with the particular job elements to successfully perform the duties of Maintenance Worker without more than normal supervision.

Physical Demands: Field operations are a large component of this position. The physical ability to carry moderate loads, hike over rough terrain, climb steep slopes, drive a 4X4 truck pulling a trailer, operate equipment, and use power and hand tools. The work requires walking, stooping, bending, lying flat and repeated lifting. The incumbent must have good vision, reaction reflexes and depth perception. Physical demands require coordination for hand, eye and body. The incumbent must exert physical effort related to actions such as lifting (10-100 pounds), pushing, pulling, carrying objects of various weights, sizes and shapes, walking, climbing, crawling and bending.

The office portion of this position requires sitting at computer workstations for extended periods of time to produce a bevy of work products.

Work Environment: Work is performed in all kinds of environments from an office setting to project sites in rough and steep terrain. Field work involves vehicular and foot access and may involve accessing remote areas. Incumbent must have the ability to work outdoors in both hot and cold weather may include periods of rain, snow and heavy winds. Temperatures may range from near zero to over 110 degrees Fahrenheit. Wearing of the authorized BLM uniform is required during field work, and weekend work will also be required. weather and during periods of snow, intense wind, and rain.

Incumbent is expected to use and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and devices such as earplugs, safety glasses, respirators, gloves, and steel-toed boots while working with noisy equipment, using power and hand tools, when using chemicals and paints in cleaning and other maintenance and construction activities. Work involves some duties that put the incumbent in proximity of noxious gases and fumes. It is expected that incumbent will wear PPE such as respirators while conducting these tasks and use positive ventilation to reduce risk. Construction work sometimes involves working high above ground level. It is expected that PPE will be worn during these activities. The incumbent is subject to continued safety training and is required to follow established safety and environmental health procedures and practices.
