Summary

This posting is for a Communications Manager for the International Institute (II). We are seeking an experienced communications professional with strong leadership and project management skills who can partner with the Chief Administrator and II colleagues to lead a skilled and effective communications team to promote the wide range of activities at the II and its 17 centers and programs. The ideal candidate will be an individual that embraces the II mission to provide the U-M community with the knowledge, tools, and experience to become informed and active global citizens. Responsibilities*

Supervision
  • Develop staff work plans, provide regular performance feedback, and submit annual salary recommendations.
  • Coach and mentor staff based on individual strengths and career objectives.
  • Organize and lead regular staff meetings, keeping team informed about overall communications needs across II.
  • Ensure workloads of team members are balanced and provide a broad range of experiences.
  • Closely supervise student marketing assistant, assigning work and providing regular feedback.
  • Model professional behavior, including excellent customer service, clear communication with customers, and collaborative partnerships.
  • Interview, hire, and train new employees.
  • Address complaints, grievances, and discipline when needed.

Strategic Communications and Marketing
  • Guide overall strategic communications plan for II events and programs, ensuring adherence with U-M, LSA, and II branding and quality standards.
  • Provide high-quality service, ensuring that communications and promotional materials are accurate and issued on a timely basis.
  • Oversee communications support and service delivery across the II and its 17 centers and programs. Along with other members of the II Communications Team, plan, prepare, and execute promotion plans for II events, programs, and academic offerings. Work closely with staff and faculty to plan specific communication strategies by identifying audiences and discussing publication material content and distribution. Prepare and distribute materials in printed and electronic forms, working with vendors as needed.
  • Oversee social media across II, implementing brand standards and best practices. Manage central II social media accounts, write and post content. Maintain and monitor social media tools including Sprout, ensuring appropriate access levels for content managers.
  • Oversee ongoing and frequent website content updates and maintenance to ensure that information is up-to-date and accurate. Remain informed of CMS updates and training.
  • Collaborate with directors and staff on development communications strategy and messaging.
  • Lead crisis communications, working closely with II Director and Chief Administrator to respond proactively to issues regarding current events or operational issues in collaboration with LSA and U-M communications offices.
  • Represent the II across campus. Establish and maintain relationships with other U-M communications offices, attend meetings and informational sessions, and serve on committees as appropriate.

Procedures and Workflow
  • Monitor and manage team shared inbox that serves as a ticketing system for receiving communications requests and updating requestors of project status.
  • Establish and regularly review procedures for workflow, including developing tracking systems, assessing capacity, and recommending solutions.
  • Establish and document procedures and best practices.
  • Communicate updates and changes to II staff, sharing current policies, procedures, forms, and tools on internal Sharepoint site.

Leadership and Professional Development
  • Participate in regularly scheduled meetings with II Central office and II Cluster Managers, contributing updates and perspectives.
  • Direct training on communications tools and procedures for new staff across the II and manage appropriate levels of access to social media accounts and similar systems.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship of university resources including human, physical, and financial resources.
  • Seek out and engage in training and professional development opportunities to develop leadership and communications skills.


Required Qualifications*

Bachelor's degree in related field.

At least four years of experience working in communications/marketing.

Demonstrated competence in writing and editing a variety of materials including articles and promotional materials.

Experience developing, editing, and strategically utilizing websites.

Understanding of effective social media usage.

Demonstrated knowledge and skilled use of graphic design software and ability to create unique designs and templates.

Knowledge of printing procedures, technology, and practices.

Attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to problem solve effectively within appropriate guidelines and parameters. Highly developed organizational skills, along with experience and competence utilizing and leveraging technology.

A strong commitment to provide excellent customer service along with the ability to motivate others to do the same.

Experience working with diverse constituents.

Ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously and successfully meet deadlines.

Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with demonstrated commitment to creating a positive work environment.

Excellent computer skills and advanced knowledge of Microsoft, Google, and Adobe tools.

Desired Qualifications*

Master's degree in Communications, Marketing, or related field.

Prior experience or training in supervision and work delegation.

Demonstrated initiative to gather information, analyze data, and problem-solve both independently and as part of a team.

Experience working in higher education communications.

Familiarity with U-M policies and procedures.

Work Schedule

40 hours per week Monday through Friday with occasional evening/weekend hours.

Work Locations

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts has a flexible and hybrid work policy. Work may be performed on campus and remotely as approved by the supervisor. This position will be expected to work a minimum of three days on campus each week during the academic year.
