Job Description

About This Role

The Senior Medical Liaison Manager will be field/customer-facing (50%). You will be the medical and scientific face of the Biogen UK affiliate in the field. Provide field based medical/scientific support around Biogen's disease area and products as deemed appropriate within the governance framework. Build valued constructive partnerships with key stakeholders within the medical community and healthcare system, developing and delivering a structured territory/KME engagement plan. Deliver internal and external medical education and medical/scientific information exchange; gather insights to support the Biogen strategy and to support activities related to research/data generation.

In additional you will have project/office-based medical affairs (50%) responsibility where you will proactively contribute, enrich and execute the medical strategy in collaboration with her/his management. Develop and deliver medical affairs projects including scientific communication material for internal and external use, congress symposia, advisory boards. Identify opportunities to generate clinical or fundamental scientific projects to address identified unmet needs and inform clinical care practice knowledge that will benefit patients in relevant therapeutic areas. Provide medical input to cross-functional projects such as health technology appraisals, special access arrangements, budgetary notification, real-world evidence and registers.

Contributors at the Senior level will operate with a greater level of autonomy in development and execution of activities, including management of associated budget, undertake projects of greater strategic importance, and provide mentoring/leadership to other members of the medical department.

Therapy area alignment in accordance with changing business need, at the direction of the Associate Director - Field Medical Excellence or Head of Medical Affairs. No line management responsibility. This is a field-based role with attendance at the Biogen UK office in Maidenhead according to business need. Ideally the successful candidate would be based in the north of the UK.

What You'll Do

Field/customer-facing:
  • Maintain a territory and/or KME engagement plan aligned to the strategic medical/integrated customer plan; develop a network of relationships with key HCPs (appropriate to product/TA lifecycle), implemented to standards set by local and above country metrics.
  • Ensure aligned medical scientific communication to external stakeholders at peer-to-peer level via 1:1 interactions and group presentations, including developing or localizing effective, compliant communication materials including medical education, and maintaining/fulfilling an active SERF list, dissemination of company data reactively and proactively, using a variety of media: digital channels, HCP engagement (1:1 and group)
  • Work as an active member of the cross-functional Insights team, compliantly sharing medical activity and partnering with territory teams to implement business plans. Reactively Support Field Commercial and Field Market Access as required
  • As needed and agreed with TA medical lead, develop solutions and co-create materials for field activity
  • Deliver 'expert speaker' presentation modules in a commercial setting in collaboration with colleagues. If the role holder has not previously achieved this certification, take the ABPI representatives' exam within one year of starting the role and pass within two years.
  • Support the Medical Information department with escalated and/or complex enquiries.
  • Capture systematic and structured medical insights through scientific exchange for consolidation at the regional medical level.
  • Coordinate collaborative research /Investigator initiated research, including MRRC submission and review, contracting, progress monitoring, payments, review of scientific publications and presentations, and study close-out
  • Acquire and maintain high level of scientific knowledge on the disease environment and our key therapeutic areas by attending relevant congresses, reviewing the relevant literature on a regular basis and ensuring information/insight gathering to inform affiliate activity, including patient pathway mapping.

Project/office-based medical affairs
  • Provide medical input into strategic brand, portfolio and KME engagement planning; develop and execute medical tactical plans, including delivering a territory or product KME engagement plan
  • Initiate, implement and monitor scientific projects aligned with the medical strategy and in cross functional cooperation, in respect of Biogen compliance and local environment requirements, including but not limited to medical education, advisory boards, scientific meetings and symposia (program and speakers management)
  • In conjunction with TA medical lead, support access to Biogen products through input into health technology appraisal submissions, special access arrangements, developing materials for budgetary notification processes, developing and managing real-world evidence registers and allied initiatives
  • In conjunction with TA medical lead/manager, plan, prepare and project-manage Biogen publication activity - e.g., abstract submission and poster development, ensuring alignment to the brand plans and budget
  • Participate in and contribute to internal training initiatives / activities (including, but not limited to, regional medical groups, MSLs, Sales representatives, and other field-based representatives).
  • Where necessary to support the business, provide additional ABPI review and examination capacity (as appropriate and qualified) for communication materials - ensuring the highest standards are maintained, in line with the ABPI Code of Practice, other applicable laws and regulations and Biogen processes.
  • Ensure maintenance of up-to-date knowledge of the ABPI and other relevant industry Codes, act at all times in a Code-compliant manner, and provide Code mentorship to others in the business.
  • Maintain integrity and compliance with Biogen SOPs in all aspects of work, including direction on Field Medical Ways of Working for engaging with customers and working with other Biogen field staff in customer settings.

Who You Are

You are a proactive and experienced professional with relevant experience and a good understanding of Medical Affairs, Medical Information, Research, Pharmacovigilance, Legal, and Pharmaceutical Compliance. You are a visionary capable of driving leadership with the ability to work effectively in a dynamic cross-functional environment. A collaborative, innovative mindset with robust communication skills and a proven track record in the pharmaceutical industry.

Qualifications

  • Ideally Higher scientific degree or medical/pharmacy qualification (Pharm D or PhD, MBChB or equivalent). Bachelor's, Master's or nursing qualification may be considered based on additional experience and demonstration of scientific aptitude.
  • At least 2 years' experience in field medical affairs (MLM), or for Sr MLM, 4 years including a mix of field and office-based medical affairs experience.
  • Medical/scientific or prior role experience in therapeutic areas related to current Biogen portfolio or pipeline is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and acquired knowledge and skills/competencies to the degree expected at job level.
  • Appropriate Skills and Knowledge in Medical Affairs, Medical Information, Research, Pharmacovigilance, Legal, and Pharmaceutical Compliance.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of an annual medical action plan, in line with the medical strategy.
  • Pro-active self-starter; effective team worker and collaborator, with excellence in implementation and execution.
  • Good customer-relationship and networking capabilities.
  • Effective and adaptable presentation skills, ability to succinctly present to a variety of audiences, internal and external to Biogen
  • Externally focused mindset and science oriented.
  • Autonomous in medical event organization.
  • Excellent collaboration skills - both cross-functionally and within medical.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
