Primary Position Duties:

  • Role and Responsibilities
    ·         Provide information about the zoo facility, its collection of animals and conservation to general public through programs, presentations and tours.
    ·         Conducts an average of two (2) tours per day, each approximately two (2) hours in length, or conducts multiple animal experience tours (30-45 minutes each). All tours are walking tours and are not motorized.
    ·         Greet all guests promptly at scheduled tour times.
    ·         Interpret educational animal demonstrations in conjunction with Education and Husbandry staff.
    ·         Assist with community based events.
    ·         Other duties as assigned. 
     

Education or Skills:

  • Qualifications and Requirements
    • High School Diploma or Equivalent. Preference will be given to those who possess a degree in Natural Sciences or Education -OR- are pursuing a similar type degree –OR- are Certified Interpretive Guides.
    • Exceptional customer service skills.
    • Positive attitude.
    • Must be a team player with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Ability to work weekends and potentially some evenings during special events.
    Preferred Skills
    • Ability to use a variety of interpretive techniques to convey information to the public.
    • Good public speaking ability and willingness to give presentations to a large audience.
    • Previous animal experience preferred, but not required.
    • Previous tour guide experience preferred, but not required. 

Position Requirements:

  • Physical Requirements
    • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds.
    • Frequent to constant standing and walking throughout the workday outside and on uneven terrain.
    • Ability to work in Alaska weather extremes.
    • While performing duties of this job, you will be required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop or kneel, talk and hear, and use fingers and hands to feel objects, tolls or controls.
