SAFETY

Employees are also expected to comply with company and federal safety & health regulations, safety rules & policies, as well as procedures that guide work practices to reduce risk to exposure.  Such work practices include but are not limited to wearing required safety equipment, responding to safety concerns, and taking appropriate actions in the event of an emergency. 

 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Repair wooden railroad bridges, trestles, and tunnel supports 

  • Repair/replace structural steel members of bridges 

  • Perform concrete and conventional carpentry work 

  • Study blueprints, building plans, or sketches for information pertaining to fabrication for type of material required and dimension of structure/fixture 

  • Lay out work, mark cutting and assembly lines 

  • Assemble, cut, shape material and fasten together with nails, dowel pins, glue, and other appropriate fasteners 

  • Build stairs, windows, doors 

  • Lay out and install partitions and cabinet work 

  • Fit and install fabricated windows, doorframes, weather stripping, interior/exterior trim, and hardware such as locks, letter drops, and kick plates 

  • Apply various roofs/roofing materials, to include hot/cold application, shingles, corrugated sheets 

  • Pour ready-mixed concrete and finished concrete surfaces per specification 

  • Perform concrete work tasks in construction, maintenance, and repair of tunnels and culverts 

  • Cut and weld steel members to make alterations; fasten steel members to hoist cable

WORKING CONDITIONS 

  • Primarily outdoors 

  • Extreme all-weather conditions 

  • Walk and perform work on uneven surfaces 

  • Safety sensitive work environment 

  • Work on/near roofs, bridges, and rails 

  • Exposure to passing trains 

 

SHIFTS/HOURS 

  • Full-time 

  • Monday-Friday subject to on-call (24/7), nights, overtime, weekends, and holidays 

 

TRAVEL 

  • Travel to and remain on job sites around designated seniority region, sometimes for extended periods of time  

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS 

  • 21 years old or older

  • Must have valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or be able to obtain one within the first 60 days of employment 

  • Able to work safely in the above working conditions 

  • Able to work the above shift/hours  

  • Able to meet the above travel requirements 

  • Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English, as well as issue and act on oral instructions clearly and accurately with using email, text, telephone and other methods of communication 

  • Able to stoop, bend, walk on uneven surfaces; walk, stand, bend, lift, sit for extended time 

  • Able to use hands, hand tools, and power tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning, and pulling 

  • Able to lift and carry up to 90 pounds without assistance 

 

TRAINING 

  • Company-paid on-the-job training, including preparation, equipment and expenses to obtain CDL as needed 

 

RELOCATION 

  • Assistance not available 

 

UNION 

  • Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees 

  • Dues required per union agreement  

 

SENIORITY DISTRICT TRANSFERS 

  • Per union agreement 

  • Seniority-based 

  • Requires Manager approval 

 

PROBATIONARY PERIOD 

  • 60 days
