Job Description:

Position Overview

This Associate General Counsel role requires the ability to promptly identify regulatory/compliance, commercial and risk/reputation issues and implement solutions, provide commercial as well as legal advice, develop strong relationships with key stakeholders, and have the confidence to advise on issues that have significant business impact.

All duties are to be performed in accordance with Company and departmental policies, practices, and procedures. All Company Team Members are expected to conduct and carry themselves in a professional manner at all times. Team Members are required to observe the Company's standards, work requirements and rules of conduct.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Advise SDS Executive team and key business stakeholders on regulatory risk, including preparing regulatory analysis and risk statements as necessary - considering the jurisdictional legal position alongside Group, reputational and third-party stakeholder issues, particularly with regards to regulator and banking relationships. Liaise with Group functions, including Compliance, as required.
  • Work with the Business Development team and Compliance to assess viability of potential new licences worldwide and supervise licence applications from a Legal perspective.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with national regulatory authorities and external stakeholders.
  • Work closely with Compliance team and local counsel on any regulatory proceedings globally.
  • Advise on regulator notifications / interactions generally.
  • Review Compliance and AML policies.
  • Regulatory assistance on any corporate activity globally.
  • Work closely with Treasury team - providing operational justifications where necessary directly to banking partners.
  • Assist Commercial Legal team with relevant regulatory language for a variety of commercial contracts.
  • Apply commercial acumen in reviewing and stress-testing regulatory aspects of commercial deals.
  • Offer counsel on a variety of legal issues and develop solutions to complex legal questions. Prepare legal memoranda and research legal issues as necessary.
  • Provide support on data protection matters including ICO notifications, standard contractual clauses and review of policies e.g. data retention.
  • Manage various projects and deadlines.
  • Work with external legal panel and manage associated spend.
  • Regular catch-up sessions with key stakeholders including business development and compliance, and finance, tax and company secretaries as needed.
  • Keep abreast of legislative changes that may affect the Company and provide training to the business and wider Legal team.
  • Proactively work with Legal colleagues in the UK, Bulgaria and the US to ensure the effective sharing of good practice and a consistent approach to risk.
  • Keep standard forms and precedents under review / updated.
  • Support committee and company decisions, even if unpopular.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Proof of eligibility to work in the UK.
  • At least 6+ PQE with proven gambling regulatory experience (in a B2C, B2B or law firm environment).
  • Strong academic and legal background - preferably with experience in a law firm.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, with strong drafting skills.
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills.
  • Working knowledge of data protection requirements.
  • Must possess extensive knowledge of business and the ability to work collaboratively and communicate with the Company's management team.
  • Commercial in approach, understanding the impact of legal issues or solutions on the operational activities of the business.
  • Ability to travel internationally.
  • Strong financial acumen and bottom-line orientation.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships and communicate effectively with the business and other team members of different backgrounds and levels of experience.
  • Flexible in approach and a willingness to take on a varied workload.
