  • This position on the Investigations team performs a critical role in the American Airlines Safety Management System by guiding or supporting comprehensive root cause analysis investigations accidents, incidents, injuries, and instances of non-compliance with company or regulatory standards.  The investigation team is a group of highly trained individuals who apply a structured approach to event reviews across all operational departments to promote organizational learning and drive risk-based, informed decision making to enhance and improve our safety culture.  
  • This position partners with the broader Safety organization and the operational departments to ensure we are learning from events and improving safety and compliance.  This position supports a learning investigation within the framework of a just safety culture where the focus will be on identifying opportunities to learn and improve and not on punitive actions.  This position will partner with the business and process owners to gather necessary information and knowledge needed in order to develop recommendations that will most effectively mitigate the risk of incident reoccurrence and has significant influence on the company's overall safety performance.  The scope of the investigations team will be to ensure a corporate standard response to NTSB and non-NTSB investigations into significant events or near misses to ensure stakeholder review and quality review of company event investigations.  These investigations can include accidents, incidents, and instances of non-compliance.  This team will be curious, attempt to problem solve, and consider all aspects of system and human reliability and performance through the course of investigations and action reviews.  This team will also be responsible for out-briefing investigations to stakeholders and producing summaries for sharing broad lessons learned.
  • The Investigations team will have a presence in the operation.  The Investigator will provide serve as a liaison with the larger Safety organization for other safety needs. 
     

What you'll do

  • Conducts learning investigations for accidents, incidents, instances of non-compliances and near-misses, and provides insights into the root causes and contributing factors, as well as recommendations to prevent re-occurrence
  • Supports the ASAP programs with investigations and provide briefings to the ASAP ERC of investigative findings and recommendations
  • Collaborating with operational leaders and union safety representatives to gain knowledge and insights
  • Act as a trusted partner who is skilled in interviewing to encourage team members to be forthcoming about what happened and why and to partner in solutions and improvements
  • Considers human and organizational factors to ensure that investigations reveal the cause(s) and contributing factors. 
  • Ensures investigation reports are meaningful, technically sound, and action orientated and are completed in a timely manner.
  • Uses the results of these investigations to partner with Safety Assurance, the Operations, and other stakeholders to drive corrective actions that effectively reduce the risk of incident recurrence. 
  • Develops, encourages, and insists upon a culture of safety and compliance
  • Collaborates with subject matter experts to ensure an in-depth investigation
  • Interfaces with other departments as necessary for research or information sharing purposes
  • Act as subject matter expert/resource for Safety 
  • Must be able to travel worldwide on short notice and serve in a 24/7 on-call status

All you'll need for success

Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • Bachelors degree in related field or equivalent experience
  • 3 years of related work experience
  • Airframe and Powerplant License

Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience

  • 3 years of airline operations experience 
  • Experience presenting technical data to company leadership 

Skills, Licenses & Certifications

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees 
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills along with an ability to work well with others in a collaborative setting
  • Ability to work effectively with all levels within the organization as well as outside agencies and organization
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of proprietary and sensitive information
  • Well-organized and able to prioritize tasks and manage crisis situations
  • Must possess decision-making abilities, organizational skills, and ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office to include the use of common database, presentation and word processing software
  • Must fulfill a criminal background check to qualify for unescorted access privileges to airport security identification display areas (SIDA), if applicable 
  • Must hold a valid passport and be able to travel internationally on demand
  • Must be able to secure appropriate airport authority and/or US Customs security badges, if applicable
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of time and work various shifts including weekends, holidays and days off if necessary
