Who we are:

Council on International Education and Exchange (CIEE) is a nonprofit study abroad and intercultural exchange organization that transforms lives and builds bridges between individuals and nations through study abroad and international exchange experiences that help people develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.

CIEE Edinburgh was established in 2023 and will be running their first High School Study Abroad programmes in June and July 2024.

Programme Description

CIEE is offering three-week-long High School Summer Abroad (HSSA) Topic programmes at CIEE Centres around the world for U.S. high school students in the 2024–2027 graduating classes. Our programmes provide participants with a unique CIEE experience. Participants are immersed in the culture of the host country through 45+ hours of instruction related to the topic (both in and out of the classroom) and cultural activities.

Instructors are responsible for developing the syllabus from a broad framework and creating the lesson plans for the three-week course. All instructors, with the support of local CIEE Centre staff, are responsible for providing a safe environment for the participants while they are in the classroom.

Instructors are required to participate in a minimum of 8 hours of training in April and May, which will be delivered in English synchronously and asynchronously by the US-based High School Summer Abroad team.

Please note that Centre staff will observe instructors while teaching at least once during the programme.

CIEE uses the learning management system Canvas for its study programmes.

In addition to the instructor, there will be one or more Programme Leader(s) on the programme. Programme Leaders supplement student learning by helping participants make connections between lectures, field research, activities, and excursions. Programme Leaders will lead by example, inspire participant curiosity, and manage the group during the day.

All CIEE HSSA programmes aim to facilitate intercultural, experiential opportunities from which the participants will gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills to live, and excel, in a culturally diverse world—CIEE’s mission. Please visit the High School Summer Abroad homepage for more information on our HSSA programmes.

 CIEE Edinburgh programme

The title of the HSSA programme that will be offered in Edinburgh this summer is Creative Writing in the Land of Lochs & Legends. The programme is intended to immerse students in the city's rich literary history, intertwining its captivating gothic narratives, crime tales, and mythological legends to give them an understanding of the inspirations that have given birth to some of Scotland's most iconic works.

Students will delve into the city's literary roots and extract inspiration from their own experience of exploring a city that has influenced so many legendary. Beyond merely reading and analysing text, students will also be guided on crafting their own narratives and recording audio renditions of their unique tales.

Who you are:

CIEE is looking for individuals who are committed to experiential education and who are enthusiastic about sharing their expertise with high school age students. The instructor should have excellent classroom management skills and experience teaching high school students is preferred. All instructors will be supported by local CIEE Edinburgh staff.

 Primary Responsibilities—Topic Programme Instructor

  • PRE-PROGRAMME:
    1. Developing curriculum and programme plan:
      • Our courses involve active student learning, skill development, inclusive teaching techniques and experiential learning activities (site visits, attending events, guest speakers, round table discussions).
      • Using the curriculum outline that has been developed by CIEE Edinburgh, develop a 3-week course complete with learning objectives, reading lists, daily lesson plans (conducted inside and outside the classroom) and course assessments.
      • Liaise with the CIEE Edinburgh Centre Director on the curriculum development and the co-curricular activity plan.
    2. Prepare the on-programme Canvas course. At a minimum, Canvas should be used to post the syllabus, post and collect assignments, and post feedback on coursework and grades. CIEE will provide a Canvas course template.
