The East Bay Regional Park District is one of the largest regional park districts in the United States. Founded in 1934 in an effort to preserve some of the region's unique natural resources, the Park District provides parks, open space, interpretive, and recreational opportunities to the residents of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Situated in the beautiful and growing multi-ethnic population area on the east side of San Francisco Bay, the Park District manages more than 95,000 acres of parkland, which includes 65 parks and over 1100 miles of regional trails. The Park District employs over 530 regular employees and an additional 250 seasonally. Volunteer opportunities for individuals and groups include helping with projects such as: -animal, bird, and plant species census -habitat enhancement and resource protection -vegetation management (native and non-native) plant propagation and removal -trail rehabilitation/maintenance -restoration of antique farm equipment -leading historical tours -assisting with environmental education -Volunteer Trail Safety Patrol (bicycle patrol, mounted patrol, hiking patrol and companion dog patrol)
