John Ascuaga's Nugget is one of the staples of the casino industry in Sparks. Sparks is Reno's sister city which was founded in 1905. John's A (as the hotel is known locally) is one of the original Nuggets. Highway I-80 runs directly next to the hotel, but the guest rooms are quiet as well as luxurious. The Nugget has one of the largest tropical fish tanks in the world and a new recreational area on its fifth floor that features hot tubs and an indoor pool. It also houses the famous [Golden Rooster], worth $140,000 and is the largest complete piece of 18-karat gold in the world at 14.1 pounds. It was responsible for a heated skirmish between the casino and the U.S. Treasury Department in the early 1960s.
