This position is primarily responsible for the supervision and management of all facets of assigned total health and wellness programs and the membership department in accordance with the policies established by the Board of Directors of the Roxbury Branch and the General Board of Directors of the YMCA of Greater Boston, under the direction of the Executive Director. This position is the Health and Wellness Champion for the branch and must assist each department in providing resources and support to help implement and maintain quality of health and wellness in their programs. The programs should include, but are not limited to, health and wellness programs in each department for adults, youth, teens, seniors and special populations. Additional responsibilities including supervising and managing water and land group exercise programming. Membership includes the front desk and lobby areas. This position is also responsible for the development, administration, supervision and membership service delivery of the Fitness and Membership Departments. This position reports to the Associate Executive Director.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/PRINCIPLE
ACTIVITIES:

  • Develop, implement and oversee all Health and Wellness Programs for every department that reflect the community's needs and maintain the YMCA's high standards of quality, safety and character development.
  • Hire, train, supervise and evaluate Assistant Health and Wellness Director, Membership Coordinator, Wellness Consultants, group exercise instructors, and volunteers as programs dictate and budget guidelines allow.
  • Integrate a comprehensive health, wellness and membership approach in all programs for children, youth, teens, adults, and special populations.
  • Must understand the relationship of the general public, including Public School System, to the Roxbury Branch and Total Health and Wellness Programs and be able to effectively enhance and cultivate those relationships.
  • Coordinate annual Road Race and special events.
  • Develop and implement annual budgets for assigned program and membership areas, and manage agreed upon budgets within operating guidelines.
  • Responsible for program and membership enrollment, retention, evaluation, payment records, and reporting of records to the Associate Executive Director.
  • Oversee all purchases and maintain department related supplies within budget guidelines and maintain a clean and safe program area.
  • Participate in staff meetings, Board of Director meetings, and professional training as appropriate.
  • Attend appropriate quality team as it relates to Total Health.
  • Maintain a professional image and manner consistent with the YMCA's mission and goals.
  • Act as a role model and incorporate character development values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility into the daily operation of the fitness department.
  • Assume other duties deemed necessary by supervisor.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor's degree in exercise science, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • At least three years experience in instructing related programs.
  • At least three years supervision experience
  • Experience in personal training, and health and wellness programming.
  • Background in internal marketing/special events.


SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES/KNOW HOW:

  • Understand the relationship of the general public to the association, of staff to volunteer, and of staff to staff, and be able to effectively enhance and cultivate those relationships.
  • Ability to interpret, carry out and implement into programs, the mission and goals of the YMCA.
  • Ability to supervise staff and volunteers while actively handling a variety of functions at the same time.
  • Work as an integral member of a staff team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with adults, youth, teens, seniors and special populations.
  • Computer literate.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Ability to physically and verbally interact with members and staff.
  • At times, be able to lift amounts up to 50 lbs.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Ability to be flexible to work evenings, early mornings, weekends and holidays.
