The Helena Family YMCA is seeking an energetic, high-performing Camp Director for the 2012 summer season. The Camp Director takes an active, on-going role in teaching, evaluation and leadership functions of all campers and staff under his or her direction; helps coordinate, organize, and facilitate summer programs, including staff, training, and program development; coordinates all aspects of the program and is responsible for all summer camp operations. This includes, but is not limited to program, staff management, maintenance, marketing and parent interaction. This position reports to the Associate Executive Director and the CEO. This is a seasonal position from February to September. Director will work with the CEO, Associate Executive Director, Finance Director, Facilities Director, and other directors in order to build positive, safe programs for all.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least three seasons of camp administrative experience preferred;
  • Experience in supervising staff and campers;
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control;
  • Strong supervisory and counseling skills.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Minimum 21 years of age;
  • Exhibit a sincere interest in children, comprehend their needs and place them and the summer camp ahead of personal desires;
  • Demonstrate leadership experience in managing a variety of programs, motivational skills and ability to communicate both orally and in writing;
  • Current certifications in First Aid/CPR.


Essential Functions:

  • Define and plan program to reflect YMCA Camp goals, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Supervise camp counselors, program directors, counseling staff, and CITs giving them direction, resources, and leadership.
  • Oversee all program areas ensuring safety, quality instruction and fun.
  • Ensure all programs follow established guidelines, including federal, state, and local regulations as well as ACA standards.
  • Assist supervisory staff and counselors with the recognition of camper needs and be prepared to support or follow through on their efforts.
  • Uphold and exemplify the principles of the YMCA of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
  • Evaluate staff, program areas, and other aspects of camp and implement improvements during summer and generate suggestions for the future.
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment for all campers, staff, families, and lease groups by following established camp and YMCA rules/policies.
  • Maintain a good working camp facility by ensuring daily cleanings of the lodge and bathhouse, disposal of trash on a daily basis, removal of litter/damaged equipment/hazardous material around the camp grounds, replacement of damaged equipment, contracting of specialty services when needed, and general upkeep of the facility.
  • Supervise all volunteers and staff working as dishwashers, servers, cooks, counselors, lifeguards, and ropes course staff, in conjunction with all Helena Family YMCA policies and practices.
  • Maintain good working relationships with all lease groups. Lead the Camp Orientation on first day of arrival and final walk through of camp facility with each lease group.
  • Apply proper discipline where campers learn the difference between correct and incorrect behavior (at no time will corporal punishment or physical means be tolerated)
  • Serve as a role model for all campers, staff, families, and guests, conducting yourself properly while participating in all required activities with an enthusiastic attitude.
  • Assist all counseling staff and outside directing staff when needed.
  • Attend all pre-camp meetings, trainings, and orientations while making yourself available for all other related dates, activities, and camp events. Maintain excellent communications with groups and parents/campers.
  • Director is responsible for marketing and promoting the camp to potential Y Camp participants and ensuring adequate enrollment is achieved to operate successful camps.
