Basic Purpose of Job:
Diesel Mechanics are responsible for the inspection, repair and maintenance of the engine and mechanical components of diesel electric locomotives. Physical duties involve occasionally climbing and maintaining balance on locomotive steps and ladders to gain access to the locomotive roof; maintaining balance when occasionally walking on catwalks, running boards, uneven terrain, ballast, and roofs while making repairs; stepping around objects and equipment on the floor; performing work while occasionally bending and stooping, and being in awkward postural positions; performing occasional overhead work for short periods of time; lift/carry and push/pull objects weighing 25 lbs (frequently) and up to 86 lbs. (usually with assistance); and remaining standing or sitting for more than one-half of every work day with the opportunity to periodically change position for comfort.


Accountabilities:
•    Inspect and service the diesel locomotive fleet in compliance with company, federal, and industry standards.
•    Detect and interpret visual color signals and displays at near and far distances; identify alterations of objects (size, shape, temperature); detect unusual sounds and smells during inspections and tests (leaks in air systems); use depth perception to judge speed and distance of locomotives being moved on service area, and listen to detect warning signals.
•    Understand and follow company and industry safety rules, practices, and standards.
•    Ensure safety of self and co-workers.
•    Diagnose diesel engine, air compressor, and other locomotive mechanical system malfunctions.
•    Repair, replace, or rebuild locomotive and diesel engine components as needed.
•    Prepare equipment and materials as needed, and effectively operate the equipment, including the following:
o    Measuring instruments (micrometers, tape measures, dial calipers).
o    Precision machines (drill and punch presses, bench lathes).
o    Hand tools (drills, wrenches, grinders).
o    Material handling equipment (forklifts, cranes, overhead hoists).
•    Maximize locomotive availability for the company.
•    Conduct job briefings to ensure safe and effective coordination of activities.
•    Ensure that all equipment or materials are available and ready for use as needed.
•    Communicate technical information, job briefing information, job procedure recommendations, and other work-related information with others through writing, in-person interaction, telephone, radio, and intercom.
•    Read, interpret, understand, and find (if necessary) written or electronic information, including information from diagrams, schematics, blueprints, graphs, and charts, and input information as needed into a computer.


Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
•    Applicants for this position must pass a pre-employment test in English before being allowed to interview. The number of candidates who pass the test and will be granted an interview is based upon hiring needs. Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
•    Applicants must have an Associates Degree or a certificate in Diesel Technology
•    Applicant must be able to provide verifiable documentation of a minimum of 4 years of combined mechanical education and work experience with trucks, ships, farm equipment, airplanes, trains OR 4 years of mechanical work experience OR a current journeyman's mechanical card.


Background:

Medical:
•    Employment with Union Pacific is contingent upon the successful completion of a medical examination. In addition, the company conducts for-cause, post-accident, and random drug and alcohol testing of its employees.


Union:
•    International Association of Machinists.
•    The probationary period is 90 working days.
•    Union membership initiation fee and monthly dues or assessments are required as per the collective bargaining agreement.


Work Conditions:
•    Must wear personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, safety boots, hard hats, and hearing protection where the company requires. In addition, they must become respirator certified. They will be working:
o    Indoors and outdoors, regardless of weather conditions.
o    At heights of 18 feet or more above the ground.
o    With, on, and around moving or rotating heavy equipment.
o    In confined spaces.
o    Working forty-hour work weeks that may include variable shifts with overtime and work on rest days, holidays and weekends.
