Basic Purpose of Job: We are seeking ambitious and dedicated individuals to lead our organization into the future. Join our Operations Management Training program and launch a lifelong career with Union Pacific Railroad. As a Mechanical Manager in Training, you will gain experience and competence in transportation and mechanical operations, process improvements and first-line management of unionized work crews. Upon completion of the 12-month training program, you will be assigned to a work location where you will direct safe inspection, maintenance and repair activities on freight cars and locomotives. We need critical thinkers with strong analytical and communication skills who have the confidence to lead a diverse crew of people.
This is an exceptional first-line field management opportunity with significant growth potential. Working in Operations is not a typical 8-to-5, Monday-through-Friday job and it requires someone able to handle a fast-paced, deadline-oriented work environment. This opportunity will require long hours in all weather conditions and relocation several times throughout your career. Starting salary for this position begins at $62,000. There are incremental salary increases at 6 months & 12 months (up to $67,500) and upon placement after 18 months of training (to $75,600). Salary can vary based on skills, experience and geographical location.
Accountabilities:
- Coordinating, planning and scheduling improvement and maintenance programs for freight cars and locomotives
- Executing action plans to achieve cost of quality business objectives and standardize processes
- Monitoring workforce levels to ensure that all jobs are covered
- Reviewing work orders for accuracy
- Implementing corrective action plans and work culture modifications as necessary
- Approving payroll, overtime and time-off requests
- Performing final shop counts and providing accurate activity reports to the manager on the next shift
- Observing mechanical crews for safety and operational compliance
Required Education, Training, Experience or Skills: A Bachelor of Science degree , Bachelor of Arts degree or will have one conferred by December 2012
Preferred Education, Training, Experience or Skills:
- A Bachelor of Science - Mechanical Engineering degree , Electrical, Industrial, or Production Management Degree
- 1 year(s) experience / knowledge in lean manufacturing or Reliability Centered Maintenance
- 1 year(s) experience / knowledge managing people or experience in a leadership role
- Advanced communication skills both oral and written
- Proficient Microsoft Suite skills and basic computer operation
