The Audubon Nature Institute manages a family of ten parks and animal facilities in New Orleans, Louisiana. Audubon is seeking a highly qualified and experienced candidate to serve as the Associate Veterinarian for the Aquarium of the Americas, The Audubon Aquatic Center, The Audubon Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, The Freeport-McMoran Species Survival Center, and the Audubon Center for Research of Endangered Species. This position manages all aspects of animal medical care for the above facilities and their diverse animal collections and also assists with the Louisiana Marine Mammal and Sea Turtle Rescue Program. This medical care includes, but is not limited to: diagnosis and treatment, preventative medicine, quarantine, disease surveillance and containment, necropsy, shipment transactions, and periodic review of diet and husbandry practices.

The successful candidate will endeavor to:

  • Efficiently respond to institute animal emergencies as needed.
  • Manage and maintain complete medical records consistent with professional standards through MedARKS and written records.
  • Participate in the supervision, training, and evaluation of our Resident, Intern, preceptors and professional colleagues.
  • Publish clinical outcomes and data in reputable journals.
  • Conduct and/or cooperate with IACUC-approved research projects.
  • Work in conjunction with Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine to develop and provide course materials, practical sessions, and lectures pertaining to zoo medicine.
  • Participate in continuing education seminars and workshops as necessary to maintain appropriate standards of care and to sustain a license to practice in the state of Louisiana.


Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2 years clinical experience in treating non-domestic animals, and at least 1 year of clinical experience with aquatic animals, including experience with sea turtles and cetaceans.
  • Must have proficiency with radiology, anesthesia and patient monitoring machines, microscopes, mobile devices, computer, fax, scanner, phone, and copy machine.
  • Graduate of an established program in veterinary medicine.
  • Must acquire a license to practice veterinary medicine in Louisiana prior to employment.
  • Must submit to drug and background screening prior to employment.
  • Board certification in the American College of Zoological Medicine (or eligibility) is preferred
  • Must maintain a valid La. Driver’s license.
  • A Negative TB test is required.
  • Current Rabies series, Tetanus and Hepatitiis A and B vaccinations.
