The Veterinary Technician/Hospital will assist the veterinarians with any duties as directed, perform diagnostic testing, order medical, laboratory and research supplies, and maintain hospital, medical, laboratory and research machines and equipment. This person will assist in all veterinary medical procedures requested by the veterinarians; check clinical log books to know when procedures are scheduled; prepare all materials required for procedures as well as clean up area and equipment after procedures; prepare and administer treatments and medications, including compounding medications as directed by veterinary staff; maintain surgery, medical equipment and pharmacy in good working order, and keep well-stocked; discard out of date drugs and materials in compliance with applicable laws and policies. He/she will perform laboratory work on hospital and research samples, including fecal analysis, urinalysis, hematology, chemistries and microbiology; operate clinical hematology and chemistry equipment; and prepare and disburse specimens for out of hospital tests. The Veterinary Technician/Hospital will organize and implement annual employee health testing. He/she will inventory medical and surgical supplies, orders supplies as needed and purge outdated supplies; maintain appropriate records; and inventory and maintain log on serum bank and enter purchase orders into Navision. This person will deliver water samples to lab from aquatic animal pools for analysis per the Marine Mammal Act and maintain required logs and deliver necropsy specimens and carcasses to Johns Hopkins University. He/she will attend required continuing education to maintain licensure; conduct tours of the hospital building, perform oral presentations on zoo grounds when required; train new staff, veterinary technician students and volunteers as needed; and will be responsible for acting as member of Zoo’s emergency response firearms shoot team. This person will enter data into MedARKS system; research and obtain bids on replacement medical equipment when requested; obtain donated equipment and tools when accepted for Zoo by senior veterinarian; and maintain hospital vehicle including vehicle records. This person will promote the mission of the Zoo; perform other duties as assigned; and adhere to all Zoo policies and procedures. Position is hourly, non-exempt. |
