Under the general supervision of the Exhibits Director, this position is responsible for the design and oversight of production and installation of all museum exhibit graphics including labels, illustrations and info-graphics. Develops graphics and environmental treatments that utilize sophisticated systems of information design to inform and educate.  Works with exhibit team to design graphics that integrate with artifact and interactive displays. Works to support institutional graphic design requirements and production needs within the museum. Each project requires research, a clear understanding of the project's intent (audience, governing thought, requests from upper management, etc.) and the ability to design within the budget and schedule parameters.  

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Work as a member of an integrated team that includes curators, the Exhibition Director, exhibit technicians and others to develop interpretive graphics, including text panels, artifact citations, info-graphics and illustrations, both print and three-dimensional environmental graphics and layout plans for displaying artifacts and other exhibition-related elements within a given space.
  • Work within exhibit team to craft exhibit graphics that support and illuminate the exhibit goals, content, and design intent.
  • Create typographic standards and layout text for exhibit panels.
  • Provide design and production management
  • Assists Exhibit Director and Chief Curator to produce presentation drawings and present these design proposals to the teams responsible for developing and approving new exhibits.
  • Administers production of graphics.  Works with vendors to secure bids for printing and/or custom sign fabrication, and supervise the production process.  Oversee and direct contract designers/illustrators when needed.
  • Maintains quality controls on graphic production.
  • Organizes and keeps current files for all drawings, documents, and communications regarding exhibit graphic development and production.
  • Creates an archive of all graphics-related files, samples and collateral at the end of each project.
  • Assist with maintenance and repair of permanent exhibit graphics.
  • Support smaller design projects such as collaboration with marketing on exhibit identities, etc.
  • Ensure the integrity of the Museum brand on all internally and externally produced design projects. Consult with marketing as needed.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.


Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of exhibition development process.
  • Be able to work with a variety of individuals and agencies.  
  • Must be able to work independently and organize time efficiently to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks and projects with changing priorities as required.
  • Proven abilities and experience in the following is preferred: illustration, image prep, typography, layout, and bid preparation, and ability to read floor plans and elevations.
  • Ability to maintain budgets and keep to timelines.
  • Proven ability to provide effective customer service for internal and external client groups.
  • Must be detail-oriented, with strong organizational skills in order to manage a continuous workflow in a high volume, multi-tasking environment
  • Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree (B.A. or B.F.A.) in Graphic Design or related field;
  • Minimum two years of professional experience in graphic design and production;
  • Proven experience in the use of Adobe Design Suite.  Additional experience with web design is a plus;
  • Working knowledge of various production processes such as silk screening, printing, vinyl, CNC, and knowledge of various substrate uses;
  • Experience in both print and 3-dimensional environmental graphics preferred.
  • Proficiency using CS2: Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign is required, knowledge of Vector Works and FileMaker Pro is a plus.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
