Under the general direction of the Director of Education & Public Programs this position is responsible for research, development, writing and teaching a variety of learning experiences utilizing the Museum's resources, collections, and exhibitions related to art, history, science, and culture to engage diverse audiences with a heightened emphasis on experiential learning, technology, and in teractivity. This position works closely with the Director of Education and the Education Team to ensure a multicultural and interdisciplinary experience aligned and supportive of the Anchorage Museum's mission.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Adapt and/or modify existing curriculum related programming to meet the needs of the Museum's education mission aligned to the appropriate standards with an emphasis in general science concepts (physics, earth science, planetarium sciences, and live animals), Alaska and Circumpolar North climate change/environmental issues and Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural understanding.
- Work with the Director of Education and Public Programs Coordinator to develop a widerange of Pre-K – 12 general science related programs for school groups, teacher professional development, and after-school programs to culturally diverse audiences and ages; and adult and teen volunteer hands-on programs.
- Research, write, develop, and teach with a variety of general science related educational materials, such as educator guides, family guides, and Pre-K - 12 trip sheets focused on the Museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions related to a variety of subject matters or as needed.
- Work collaboratively with the school programs team to deliver off-site traveling programs locally and statewide throughout the year or as needed.
- Manage related program budgets and projects with discreet timelines and budgets.
- Work collaboratively with the Public Programs Coordinator to ensure quality science-related public programs when necessary or as needed for a diverse audience of all ages and knowledge level.
- Work collaboratively with marketing to ensure education content for the website, newsletter deadlines, and/or other print related pieces when necessary.
- Manage and maintain classroom(s). Order and inventory program area supplies and/or teaching materials.
- Other duties as assigned.
PLANETARIUM, MAGIC PLANET GLOBE, AND STAR LAB SCIENCES:
- Research, develop, write, and evaluate space science related K – 12 school group programs and create curricula with a facilitated technological aspect using the permanent and
- traveling Magic Planet globe, the traveling/mobile StarLab, and the Thomas Planetarium auditorium or as needed with a focus on Alaska culture and Indigenous ways of knowing.
- Adapt and/or modify existing offsite StarLab programs and teacher professional development opportunities.
- Teach, write, and/or facilitate a variety of programs such as planetarium star shows,
- demonstrations, or customized programming as needed.
LIVE ANIMALS:
- Develop and deliver a wide-range of onsite programs with live animals, science demonstrations, and marine tank specimens.
- Work collaboratively with the Museum's Animal Keeper to ensure the safe handling and care of the animals.
NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Act as the Education Department's liaison to various internal Museum departments when necessary.
- Research current trends in content area and provide necessary data, articles, or trainings to the team when necessary.
- Facilitate, coordinate, or participate in a variety of onsite and offsite community public programs in collaboration with the Education Team as needed.
- Participate, when appropriate, in community networking events.
- Work collaboratively with all museum departments as requested.
- Perform other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: KNOWLEDGE OF:
- Curriculum and program development in general science concepts (physics, earth science, planetarium sciences, and live animals), Alaska and Circumpolar North climate change/environmental issues and Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural understanding.
- Must have excellent written and oral communication skills with ability to develop and deliver dynamic, engaging public presentations to diverse audiences of all ages in a positive, rewarding manner.
- Must be a professional, responsible, reliable motivated team player with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
ABILITY TO:
- Effectively serve as a part of a team, communicating back to peers.
- Must be available for occasional weekend and evening work when necessary.
- Work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands; seek supervisory assistance as appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's Degree in science with climate change/environmental issues and Indigenous ways of knowing and cultural understanding.
- Minimum of (1) year experience in developing formal or informal education programs and/or materials.
