Mashomack Preserve is a 2,039 acre coastal preserve with over 12 miles of hiking trails, many miles of dirt roads and 9 buildings, including a Visitor Center, 10 bedroom meeting facility, large barn and staff residences. The Buildings & Grounds Steward is responsible for maintaining all tools, equipment, vehicles and buildings on the preserve. S/He performs regular maintenance tasks, makes routine repairs, and oversees larger repairs and/or renovations. The Buildings & Grounds Steward is supervised by the Preserve Director, and works with the Preserve Steward, other staff and volunteers to maintain the preserve's trails and roads, and occasionally works on Preserve conservation projects.

The Building and Ground Steward for the Mashomack Preserve participates in preserve-based conservation programs, maintenance and management.  This may include one or more of the following functions:
  • Plan and implement repairs, renovations and maintenance on all preserve buildings, vehicles, equipment and tools, coordinating with Preserve Director, Preserve Steward and others as needed. 
  • Secure and schedule contractors to perform large maintenance and repair tasks and coordinate contract preparation and approval with Operations Manager. 
  • Work with Preserve Steward to maintain and clear preserve trails and roads.
  • Assist other staff with various conservation tasks, including, but not limited to: invasive species removal, grassland and oak forest restoration projects, and shellfish program.
  • Assist with Preserve events and programs, including Annual Benefit Dinner Dance, Holiday Open House, Memorial Day Weekend Open House and Beach Clean-up.
  • Other functions may include storing and maintaining preserve kayaks, canoes and associated equipment, assisting visitors, opening and closing the preserve to the public, planting native vegetation, maintaining and replacing preserve signs, removing garbage and recyclables to Town recycling center, and purchasing tools and supplies.
  • On rare occasions of extreme weather, may be required to spend night at Preserve Manor House. 

  • High school diploma and 4 years direct experience in facilities or equipment maintenance or related field experience.
  • Experience operating and/or repairing various types of equipment and machinery.
  • Basic understanding of electrical, plumbing, welding, and concrete.
  • Experience performing physical work.
  • Experience coordinating teams to complete construction and repair projects.
  • High School diploma and 4 years of experience in facilities or equipment maintenance or related field experience.
  • Experience in building maintenance, including painting, basic carpentry and electrical, plumbing, and heating systems.
  • Experience operating and maintaining various types of equipment in a safe and efficient manner, including lawn mowers, chainsaws, pumps and generators.
  • Familiarity with the use of various types of boats, including canoes, kayaks, rowboats and motorboats.
  • Ability to perform physical work, sometimes under adverse conditions or in inclement weather.
  • Ability to convey work instructions to other preserve management team members, including staff and volunteers.
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Web browsers).
