The SS Ocean Phoenix is a 680’ fish processor that operates at sea approximately 7 months per year in the Bering Sea.  There are two fishing seasons, one in winter and one in summer.  The ship departs from Seattle and returns to Seattle at the end of the season. 

We have a position open for Purser.  The Purser works as part of the Operations Department reporting directly to the Captain.  This position is the bookkeeper and administrative assistant while the ship is operating at sea.  Work begins in late May for an initial contract period of 100 days.   

Pay is a daily guarantee with excellent opportunity to earn a production bonus for the season.  Daily rate is established by the pay range for the position and the candidate’s experience.  Health benefits are offered at 60 days of employment.  Life insurance and 401k are offered after one year.   

Making a living at sea requires a special kind of person.  This is a physically, mentally and emotionally demanding work place.  Employees must deal with conditions such as long working hours, isolation from family and friends, cramped living conditions and bad weather.  You must be physically fit to work long hours.  You must be able to lift 50 pounds.  You must be able to live and work with a diverse group of people. 

Primary Duties

  • Maintain current and accurate crew information as necessary for the Company and the US Coast Guard
  • Work with Production Staff and Deck Department to accurately report daily production records
  • Collect and report crew hours for payroll department
  • Accounting for ship store purchases and petty cash fund
  • Record crew training
  • Record minutes for safety and staff meetings
  • Prepare crew discharge documents
  • Provide room assignments
  • Other Company and Government reports as necessary


  • Excellent communication skills
  • Good computer experience – Excel, Word and Access
  • Able to be away from home for up to 4 months at one time
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to work 12 per day, 7 days per week
  • Must have some office, bookkeeping or payroll experience
  • Human Resource experience is helpful
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test
  • As a US Coast Guard inspected vessel, a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) and Transportation Worker’s Identification Credential (TWIC) are required.  The company will assist with the credentialing process.
