Project Mining Engineer

Oyu Tolgoi is an operating Copper/ Gold open pit mine with a greenfields underground mining project attached. The site is located in the Gobi desert region of Mongolia. The reserves case for the underground project is in the order of 0.5 billion tonnes of ore to be mined from the 95,000 tonnes per day Hugo North Lift 1 (HNL1) panel cave mine with a 20 year operations life. There is also the potential for 3 further block cave districts to increase mine life beyond 100 years.
The underground project recommenced development in May 2016. Project execution is undertaken by the Oyu Tolgoi Underground Project (OTUP) team. The next 3 years is dedicated to pre-production development and cave preparation. Short-term mine planning (i.e 0 to 3+ months) is undertaken on the mine site.
The medium to long-term (i.e. greater than 3 months) mine design and planning for the HNL1 underground project is undertaken by the Mine Planning and Technical (MPT) team, based out of Brisbane. The team has a regular presence on site.
The Opportunity
The Mine Planning and Technical team has a need for full time Mining Engineer resource to in Brisbane to:
  • Direct and support the execution team in the medium range, in particular associated mine service planning for power, water, ventilation, truck haulage, and material and personnel logistics
  • Support the MPT team in delivery of mine designs, schedules and plans
  • Develop infrastructure schedules and support the project EPCM (Jacobs) in integration of life of mine service schedules into the master project schedule
  • Analyse data collected from site to improve the understanding and interface between current, and future plans for temporary and permanent mine services
  • Provide long range operational cave support for service planning
  • Develop quarterly and yearly plans for mine operation services that clearly identify constraints for de-bottlenecking
  • Draft quarterly and annual reporting of plans and actuals for internal and external circulation
  • Maintain and manage the operation risk register to ensure it is kept up to date and risk owners are supported in delivery of actions
  • Manage discrete projects to a defined project framework
What you will need for this role
To succeed in this role, you should have:
  • A Mining undergraduate degree
  • Previous experience with Deswik CAD and Scheduler
  • Project management experience
The successful candidate will need to gain knowledge of the current and future operational philosophy of Oyu Tolgoi.
Internal applicants currently working on this project in Mongolia are encouraged to apply and may be hired on secondment to this role for up to 2 years if successful.
