The Greater Joliet Area YMCA is an independent, mission-focused and award-winning YMCA association. Located in the southwestern suburbs of Chicago, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA has served the community for nearly 90 years. With 450 full and part-time staff and an annual budget of $10 million, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA is growing and looking for a motivated, dynamic and team-driven professional to join its team as its next Senior Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. The association includes four branches, 60 before and after school sites, and has plans for two capital campaigns on the horizon. Our dedication to our staff and our focus on teamwork and mission has garnered acclaim by the Chicago Tribune, as we have been named a ‘Top Workplace’ the last two years. We are seeking the right candidate to help navigate our organization through the next level of growth.
1. Bachelor's degree in human services, business, social services or equivalent; Master’s
2. Eight or more years of professional experience in the YMCA or another nonprofit preferred.
3. Knowledge and experience in all aspects of operations, including staff supervision and development, successful membership practices, quality program development and implementation, volunteerism, facility and property management and sound financial practices.
4. Understanding of the nature and purpose of the YMCA and the respective roles of volunteers and staff.
5. Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community; track record of building authentic, constructive relationships with others.
6. YMCA Organizational Leader certification preferred.
Supervises all branch executive directors to assure sound operations. Provides leadership and
Monitors monthly financial reports to assure that revenue targets are met and expenses
Ensures the operational growth of the YMCA through program expansion, member recruitment and retention, pricing strategies, new site development and collaborations.
Identifies potential areas for branch cooperative programming to accomplish YMCA goals, and works with staff groups to develop and implement programs. Fosters a climate of innovation to develop member-focused programs and leads branch staff in the planning, development and implementation of new program initiatives and activities.
In conjunction with the Human Resources Director, responsible for performance management process for all staff including, but not limited to, performance evaluations, recruitment and staff training and development.
Oversees and develops goals and establishes work plans for the Program Cabinets.
In conjunction with the Human Resources Director, develop annual plan for quarterly FT staff meetings & trainings.
Leads bi-weekly Ops team meetings.
Hospital partnership development and active role on necessary joint operating committees.
Monitors progress on strategic plan operating plan, update dashboards quarterly.
Works with Human Resources Director to assist in staff trainings and individual career development plans.
Oversee safety and risk management program.
Leads strategic program development (medically based wellness programs).
Provides related reports to committees, the Board of Directors and the President/CEO.
Provides staff leadership to assigned committees of the Board of Directors.
In conjunction with the Human Resources Director, coordinate, monitor and update Association program policies and guidelines as needed.
Implements and oversees a program evaluation system to guarantee faithfulness to the Y’s cause, and a high quality commitment to YMCA standards.
Represent the YMCA at community functions and in meeting of key stakeholders as needed.
Additional responsibilities as appropriate within the scope of the position.

Serves as a community leader building collaborations based on trust and credibility to advance YMCA mission and goals. Communicates for influence to attain buy-in and support of goals. Provides tools and resources for the development of others.
Operational Effectiveness : Integrates multiple thinking processes to make decisions. Involves members and community in the development of programs and activities. Ensures execution of plans. Institutes sound accounting procedures, investment policies and financial controls. Assigns clear accountability and ensures continuous improvement.

Anticipates challenges that can sidetrack or derail growth and personal learning. Has the functional and technical knowledge and skills required to perform well; uses best practices and demonstrates up-to-date knowledge and skills in technology.
