Based at an old farmstead in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the Mid-Atlantic crew covers the Appalachian Trail from Virginia's Rockfish Gap to the New York-Connecticut state line. Sponsored by the National Park Service, ATC, and the Trail maintaining clubs of the Mid-Atlantic region.|
No previous trail experience is necessary to join a crew - just a desire to work hard, live in the backcountry and have a great time among friends. Keep in mind that trail work is hard, physical labor. Trail construction involves working with hand tools, and getting dirty is guaranteed. The crews work eight-hour days, rain or shine, hot or cold. The minimum age for Trail crew volunteer is 18 years old. Trail Crews tackle large-scale projects such as trail relocations, rehabilitation and bridge and shelter construction.
If you'd like to apply - click the "Get Involved" button above to create a registration page, answer a few questions and select the week(s) for which you'd like to apply. Note that some sessions are two weeks long. Already volunteered for a crew? Alumni volunteers don't need to answer the questions, just new volunteers.
The Appalachian Trail Conservancy is one of the few organizations that currently does not charge an application or participation fee to participate on its Trail Crew Programs. We welcome and rely upon donations to help offset the cost of the crew program. A donation of $35 entitles you to a one-year membership in the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
