Position Description:
The Speechwriter/Senior Writer works in The Nature Conservancy’s Office of the President with lead responsibility for conceiving, drafting, and editing a variety of communications materials on the President’s behalf. Specific projects will include speeches, talking points, op-ed pieces, online content, books or book chapters and other collateral for all mediums (from print to Web). Through these written pieces, the Speechwriter/Senior Writer will raise the visibility of the President and strengthen the Conservancy’s brand. The Speechwriter/Senior Writer also works with the Internal Communications team to set editorial strategy and devise targeted outreach efforts designed to meet communications goals and objectives. S/he will work across the organization to ensure that the President’s speeches, blog postings, and other written materials are advancing the objectives and top priorities of a complex global organization.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

    • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, or related field and 6-8 years related experience or equivalent combination. Experience in journalism or executive writing and editing preferred.
    • Knowledge of and experience in writing for the Web.
    • Experience writing or editing books or book chapters preferred.
    • Excellent and versatile skills in conceptual thinking, writing, editing, and verbal communications.
    • Excellent organizational and project management skills.
    • Demonstrated experience in MS Office required.
    • Demonstrated experience in developing strategic, high quality marketing products and plans as well as familiarity with creative processes.
    • Knowledge and/or familiarity with digital communications tools, such as HTML, blogging software and other related tools preferred.
    • Experience working in a large, complex, decentralized organization.

    • Work and communicate with a wide range of people in order to develop, negotiate, and or implement programs and projects.
    • Solicit program support through clear written communications.
    • Works and interacts regularly with senior Conservancy leadership
    • Leverages constructive and effective relationships inside and outside the Conservancy.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

    • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours.
    • Ability to work under stress during peak workload periods.
    • Work requires only minor physical exertion and/or physical strain. Work environment involves only infrequent exposure to disagreeable elements.
    • The position is based in the Conservancy’s Worldwide Office in Arlington, VA

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, or related field and 6 years related experience or equivalent combination.
    • Experience writing for and working with senior executive-level leaders, such as CEOs or elected officials.
    • Experience crafting organization- or company-wide communications, including executive speeches and talking points, opinion articles, online content and academic and feature articles.
    • Experience writing for diverse audiences, including some or all of the following: internal staff, online audiences, external opinion leaders, donors, members, board members, and the public or equivalent.
    • Experience designing, implementing, and directing multiple complex projects.
    • Experience in public relations and executive visibility.
