Position Description:
Under Director of Sports Medicine Clinics direction and supervision, provide for the evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries/illness concerning athletes and support personnel registered at a USOC facility or event. Work with other Performance Services team members to enhance athlete performance. Upon assignment, serve in the capacity of Sports Medicine staff at USOC sponsored events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Healthcare Duties & Athlete Services
      1. Perform as a Health Care Service Provider (HCSP) for the health care of registered and/or assigned athletes and support personnel. Health care includes emergency care, evaluation of injuries and illnesses, developing and applying treatment and rehabilitation programs through the use of therapeutic modalities, exercise, and massage. Assist with making referrals to outside medical sources. Perform additional allied medical duties as permitted by state law and the Director of Sports Medicine Clinics.
      2. Perform as a medical team member and participate in the functions and activities essential to the clinic operations. Refer to, and accept referrals from, medical team members including physicians, chiropractors, certified athletic trainers and physical therapists. Participate in the daily care of athletes including preventative, acute care and rehabilitative procedures.
      3. Provide patient care activities as needed according to standards, regulations and functions of his/her individual professional licensure, job description and standards of care, including clinical competency, and documentation of care.
      4. Work and/or consult with leadership on operational and clinical issues/strategies and facilitate implementation of case management strategies.
      5. Work collaboratively with other sport performance team members on plans of care and performance enhancement programs, including physical examination and active care. Act as a liaison between athletes/coaches, and other appropriate parties regarding medical matters.
      6. Create and implement rehabilitation plans for athletes.
      7. Ensure compliance with medical/legal requirements for the states of practice, as well as any other states in which the employee provides service as an employee of the USOC at sporting event or activity.
      8. Work cooperatively with the Performance Services partners to plan and implement conditioning programs and other preventative measures in order to provide for maximum performance from each athlete.
      9. Consult with coaches/athletes/staff members on proper injury prevention techniques in the areas of nutrition, training periodization, bracing, safety of playing surfaces and environmental conditions.
      10. Communicate to coaches the medical status of injured athletes and return to play criteria while maintaining appropriate compliance with medical privacy laws.
      11. Maintain knowledge and proficiencies regarding the skills, techniques of care and pertinent regulations.
      12. Interface with local physicians for consults, medical coverage and support through the Director of the Sports Medicine Clinics and consult with him/her on all aspects of the Sports Medicine Program and athlete care.

    Operational Duties

      13. Keep the USOC Sports Medicine Clinic safe, clean and organized and comply with local, state and federal health and safety standards.
      14. Provide input to the Director of Sports Medicine Clinics regarding clinic processes, procedures, equipment and/or supplies.

    Leadership

      15. Assist in the professional development of Sports Medicine staff to include rehabilitative cares, pharmacy management training, emergency procedures, inventory management and blood born pathogen training.
      16. Assist in developing and maintaining professional working relationships including outside medical consultants.
      17. Assist other sports medicine staff regarding the evaluation, treatment, care and rehabilitation of injuries.

    Administrative

      18. Provide or secure transportation for athletes when appropriate for outside medical referrals.
      19. Record and enter athlete medical data for maintenance of athlete medical records.
      20. Initiate insurance claims for qualified athletes.
      21. Coordinate referrals, as directed by the Director of Sports Medicine Clinics, to outside providers for diagnostic or treatment modalities (physical therapy, MR Imaging, etc.) when deemed necessary.
      22. Assist with operational reports.
      23. Other duties as assigned.

TOOLS/EQUIPMENT:

CONDITIONS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Physical Therapy, Doctor of Chiropractic (certification from the American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians) and/or Athletic Training (BOC certified) degree with State Board licensure as indicated by degree.
    • Clinical expertise and experience in the field of sports medicine.
    • Current Health Care Provider CPR certification.
    • No record of founded malpractice claims, professional boundary violation or State Board sanctions.
    • This position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, working knowledge of computer programs.
    • Must be willing to travel and work irregular hours.
    • Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including, but not limited to athletes, coaches, administrative staff, physicians, volunteers and other medical personnel.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Dual licensure preferred.
    • AT/PT/DC/
    • CSCS
    • EMT
    • PES/CES
    • Massage or other soft tissue certification
    • Knowledge in the areas of:
    • Injury/illness prevention and treatment
    • Rehabilitation of athletic injuries
    • Performance enhancement
    • Manual medicine
    • Masters degree in sports medicine or related field or at least 10 years of clinical experience.
    • Required two (2) years sports medicine clinical experience with a variety of sports
