Position Description:
Provides primary leadership in developing and implementing campaign that builds grassroots power, by increasing the number of people involved, leaders developed, and engagement of people with influence in developing and implementing organizing campaigns Develops and determines organizing plan strategies and priorities. Plans, directs and manages all organizing aspects (financial, strategic) of assigned campaign or program - with emphasis on moving beyond coal and promoting clean energy and energy efficiency. Oversees effective implementation and results.

Scope: The Senior Field Organizer is responsible for recruiting, engaging, and motivating large numbers of new people to take repeated action which will further Sierra Club's targeted campaign or program goals. Identifies and develops volunteers to take on the role of team leaders and build grassroots power and networks. Identifies and builds alliances with other organizations which can influence decision-makers.

The Senior Field Organizer has overall program responsibility and provides experienced leadership and strategic planning, for at least one major conservation campaign or program. Manages and monitors expenses, assigns priorities and timetables, plans and develops organizing strategies, and evaluates the success of the campaign or program. Evaluates changing conditions and modifies plans accordingly. Acts as a senior advisor to staff colleagues and volunteers. Develops and supervises grasstop networks and cultivates relationships with public officials. Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media and other organizations. Acts as a senior lobbyist with public policy decision makers. Works in close cooperation with national and regional volunteers and staff. Participates in activities and services provided by the regional office.

Job Activities:

    1. Directs organizing activities of one or more major campaign or program. Works with national and regional conservation volunteers and staff to develop organizing plan to achieve conservation campaign or program goals, oversees implementation of the plan, and oversees program budget/expenses. Evaluates changing conditions and modifies plans accordingly. Evaluates the success of the campaign or program goals. Works with staff to identify opportunities to advance the Sierra Club's diversity initiatives and incorporate into organizing plans.

    2. Supports the Advancement Department in cultivating and developing effective relationships with donors and foundations within or with an interest in the assigned communities, and in the development of organizing objectives and strategies as part of grant projects and proposals.

    3. Supports the media department with outreach activities, including: developing media outreach plans; serving as a Sierra Club spokesperson to local, regional, and national media outlets; and promotes volunteer media exposure.

    4. In support of the National Political Program, identifies opportunities to advance the Club's conservation priorities through relationships with elected officials and via electoral campaigns. Assists the National Political Program in developing organizing strategies to reach political program objectives. Assures compliance with election laws and regulations.

    5. Represents the Sierra Club in regional and national coalitions and to the general public.

    6. Represents the Sierra Club to the media, public forums and venues, public education and media strategy.

    7. Supports and provides senior level professional expertise to local, regional, and national conservation volunteers and to fellow staff.

    8. Identifies and develops volunteers who will take work as part of a team and take on the role of team leaders to build our grassroots power and networks. Helps those leaders succeed by training and coaching them how to strategize, organize, inspire and motivate.

    9. Develops and supervises grasstop networks and cultivates relationships with public officials. Lobbies Members of Congress, Governors and other senior public officials on behalf of the Club on national regional conservation priorities. Develops relationships with elected public officials and their staff. Oversees development and implementation of lobby campaigns within their region and nationally.

    10. Introduces creative ideas and approaches for consideration. May handle some assignments beyond his/her home region for the good of the national organization.

    11. Performs miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned.

Knowledge & Skills:

    -- B.A./B.S. degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science, or a closely related field.

    -- 3-5 years' experience as a Field Organizer, or in a comparable position in another organization which includes substantial experience planning and managing grassroots conservation campaigns, including strategy, grassroots organizing, lobbying, media, program/employee management, budget planning and management and work with political leaders.

    -- Substantial experience in the strategic planning and direction of campaigns and programs.

    -- Demonstrated effective oversight in implementing campaign plans.

    -- Expert knowledge within the environmental field, which includes in-depth knowledge and background in specific issue areas of the environmental field applicable to the conservation campaign.

    -- Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.

    -- Substantial experience, demonstrated skill and ability, in local and regional media relations. Includes effective television and radio presence, knowledge of media technologies including video, radio, and print production processes.

    -- Expert lobbying ability.

    -- Substantial experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.

    -- Extensive travel required.

    -- Valid driver's license, satisfactory driving record, and proof of auto insurance required.
