Position Description:
The goal of PDZA’s Education Department is to connect guests with animals and their habitats and to increase understanding and appreciation of the natural world. Part-time interpreters will be responsible for delivering highly engaging interactive activities to guests throughout zoo and aquarium grounds. Duties include initiating interactions with zoo and aquarium guests through informal interpretive chats, focused activities, and scheduled presentations in a variety of exhibit settings, both in and outdoors. Interpreters will be responsible for assigned areas on grounds, including management of program materials and serving as a staff liaison for education youth volunteers in those areas. Interpreters must demonstrate continued growth in content knowledge and increased aptitude in program delivery. An active schedule is maintained throughout the day including standing for several hours in the sun and/or rain. Interpreters will also be responsible for other duties as needed, including communication with youth volunteers, assisting with events on grounds, and basic administrative and/or clerical duties.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Education in the natural sciences, education or related field or equivalent experience required.
    • Experience working with youth required; experience working in an educational setting required.
    • Must have desire to work with large groups of children and adult and have a positive, cheerful and professional attitude.
    • Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to engage with the public and be customer service oriented.
    • Must be organized with ability to multitask and follow-up on requests.
    • Must be able to work outdoors, in a variety of weather conditions, and be able to stand for long periods.
    • Must have valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
