Position Description:
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus® and the Center for Elephant Conservation are pleased to announce a unique opportunity in elephant care. Located at Ringling Bros. CEC in central Florida, the first session of the 2009 Elephant Care Intern Program will start in March 2009.
This program will expose interns to experienced trainers, handlers and veterinarians in both free and protected contact environments. The three month long course will include classroom and hands-on instruction with some 25 Asian elephants who reside at the CEC.
This is a paid internship that includes housing if needed.
Successful graduates of the program will be eligible for employment in the animal departments of one of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® traveling units or permanent elephant facilities.
Requirements:
- High school diploma; general education degree (GED) or 1 to 3 months related experience in animal care or equivalent combination of training, education, or experience. - Available to continue employment upon program completion. - Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions. - Ability to understanding to carry out simple instructions, and deal with standardized situations. - Strong sense of adventure and the willingness to learn animal handling techniques in using methods to carry out detailed instructions under the supervision of experienced staff. - Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs on a regular basis. - Ability to accept instruction and work positively with other individuals in a very diverse environment.
