Position Description:
Having a career as a Wage Marine employee in NOAA is to be an integral part of understanding the condition of the ocean and atmosphere. NOAA Wage Marine personnel add a seaman's know-how to NOAA's scientific research by directly participating in the operation and handling of scientific gear in the tumultuous ocean environment. NOAA's fleet of 19 research ships operate world-wide in direct support of NOAA's diverse environmental information programs, environmental stewardship services and applied scientific research. The highly-skilled and technical workforce provides NOAA the ability to achieve success in the conduct of nautical charting, bathymetric mapping, fisheries research, ecosystem assessments, marine environment baseline assessments, coastal-ocean circulation, and oceanic and atmospheric research. MAJOR DUTIES:

Directs and performs maintenance and repair work on the Engineering Department's ship systems in accordance with manufacturer's and shipbuilder's technical manuals and NOAA policy as directed by supervising engineer. Directs the activities of unlicensed engineering personnel while on watch or performing maintenance. Responsible for the maintenance and operational requirements that ensure safe and effective operation of the engineering, electrical, or electrical systems that may be assigned to him/her. Keeps required records, logs, and reports. Stands engine room watches at sea or in port; may be on call during non-normal duty hours as required. Performs other mission related duties as assigned, including duties related to the safety of the vessel and personnel.

All new hires are assigned to NOAA's Marine Operations Center, as a condition of employment your position will be a Mixed Tour. Mixed tour is a combination of full time, part time, and intermittent work schedules which allows the best utilization of resources based on the work requirements of the organization. There is no guarantee that you will be assigned to any particular vessel or geographic location, however, your duty location will be determined by your home of record. MOC duty locations are Norfolk, VA; Charleston, SC; Woods Hole, MA; Pascagoula, MS; Seattle, WA; Kodiak, AK; Ketchikan, AK; San Diego, Ca.

Note: Seattle based vessels are scheduled to relocate to Newport, Oregon, July, 2011.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Experience must include operating, maintaining, and repairing marine diesel electric propulsion systems, auxiliary machinery, refrigeration, ventilation systems, noise critical equipment and support systems, fully automated/unmanned engine rooms, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FEMA) systems, and automated power management systems, Shipboard Automated Maintenance Systems (SAMMS), related computer systems, software and networks, and other control devices.

IN ADDITION: Horsepower requirements may vary from ship to ship. You must fax a copy of your qualifying USCG license. See "Require Documents Section of this announcement."

Applicants must possess one of the follwing: a valid U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) license for Chief Engineer - Unlimited or Chief Engineer- limited Oceans. Chief Engineer limited Near Coastal, First Assistant Enginer Unlimited, Second Assistant Engineer Unlimited, Third Assistant Engineer, or Assistant Engineer - Limited Oceans. USCG license must be endorsed for motor vessels.
