Position Description:
This position involves work as part of a multi-disciplinary team of industrial experts to extend our knowledge of gas phase polymerization reactor process technology. The researcher will utilize both computational tools as well as experimental methods to develop a comprehensive and validated understanding of scientific problems in fluidized gas phase and multi-phase polymerization reactions. The research will be in the area of advanced instruments, electrostatics and 3-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics in fluidized bed polymerization reactors. Possible focus areas of interest include operability with different catalyst systems and additives, wall coatings and electrostatics, validation of CFD fluid bed models and raw material purification and effect on operability. The researcher will carry out fundamental laboratory polymerization kinetics studies, scale-up studies in the pilot plant and support semi-commercial and commercial runs. The researcher will require strong interpersonal skills and be able to collaborate with chemical engineers, catalyst chemists, control systems engineers, experimentalists, modelers, and analytical chemists. The initial assignment would be in support of improved operability for Univation™ Technologies licensed gas phase polyethylene process technology and catalysts. The position will be located in Baytown, TX.

Primary Job Functions:

    * Conduct research on reactor operability with different catalyst systems and additives
    * Carry out fundamental laboratory polymerization kinetics studies
    * Develop understanding of the impact of electrostatics and the effect of wall coating in polyethylene reactors
    * Develop and validate CFD fluid bed models and raw material purification and effect on operability
    * Scale-up studies in the pilot plant and develop process models
    * Support semi-commercial and commercial runs

Job Requirements:

    * Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry (Polymer, Physical or Physical Organic), or similar field with expertise in kinetics, reaction engineering, and/or complex phase behavior, modeling of complex systems, computational fluid dynamics
    * Ability to express ideas mathematically and develop computer code
    * Familiarity with polymer chemistry, analytical methods and testing for in process and product properties, including rheology from polymerization reactions
    * Familiarity with computational software tools for calculating properties and/or kinetics of organic polymeric compounds
    * Demonstrated individual contribution to research in a results-oriented team environment

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

    * Experience in advanced measurement and analytical methods in polymerization fluidized bed reactors, especially in the measurement of electrostatics and operability
    * Experience in the plastics industry
    * Experience with three dimensional computational modeling of gas-solid and multi-phase fluidized-bed polymerization reactors
    * Ability to postulate reaction fluid dynamics, particle behavior and operability and conduct experimental studies, with the aid of relevant process models and computational tools
    * Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
    * A strong track record of external publications and presentations and a desire to participate in external technical meetings
