MAJOR DUTIES:
This register will fill various Research Physical Scientist positions located in the Science Directorate.
The mission of the Science Directorate is to develop and implement research programs that advance the understanding of clouds, aerosols, key atmospheric species, and the Earth's radiation balance and determine their impact on atmospheric processes and climate.
Research assignments may include some of the following type of work:
Responsibility for the fusion of atmospheric remote sensing data and earth system models to advance understanding of climate change.
Contribute to the development of scientific goals, instrument requirements, and validation approaches for various missions.
Ensure data are used to test and improve global climate predictions.
Address the detection of trends in important climate variables, and the testing and improvement of climate prediction models.
Responsible for satellite remote sensing and theoretical investigations to develop physical understandings of radiant energy processes involving clouds, the atmosphere and the surface.
Analyze satellite remote sensing data to study clouds and aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere and their role in the Earth climate systems.
Conducts multi-satellite data fusion for scientific analyses of problems in the atmospheric sciences.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Basic Education Requirement: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major study in engineering, physical science, mathematics, life sciences, computer science, or other field of science. Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.
Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of undergraduate or graduate education only: Any appropriate field of engineering, physical or computer science or mathematics. Study must include or be supplemented by six semester hours or the equivalent in appropriate life or other natural science courses, and include or be supplemented by at least two courses which would provide knowledge of subjects appropriate to the vacancy being filled.
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) One year of professional experience in an area of climate and radiation studies at least equivalent in difficulty and responsibility to GS-11 level work in the Federal service within or closely related to the position for which application is made; or (b) Any combination of experience and graduate study; or (c) Completion of all requirements for a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field.
