Position Description:
Assists the Assistant General Counsel and Vice President and Associate General Counsel in fulfilling the legal affairs and requirements of the corporation.
Responsibilities:
1. Support ESPN's primary legal counsel on matters involving labor/employment/benefits, including acting as liaison with Human Resources relating, among other things, to matters of discipline and termination. Also act as liaison with The Walt Disney Company on legal matters relating to employment relations, benefits and similar issues.
2. Negotiate and assist in the negotiation of contracts and other binding arrangements with third parties for assigned departments and functional areas thereof. Under the supervision of the Assistant General Counsel, draft and review employment and other personal services agreements.
3. Draft or complete other legal documents used in the conduct of ESPN's business, both for the principal and regional offices.
4. Analyze federal, state and local laws and legislative and regulatory proposals as they apply to ESPN and advise the Assistant General Counsel, Associate General Counsel, General Counsel and designated department heads of their impact and of recommended compliance.
5. Serve as a secondary Legal Department contact for designated departments, provide their department heads and members with general legal advice; draft and/or approve contracts and forms required for the functions of those departments. As noted above, Human Resources will be a principal focus of duties.
6. Assist with managing litigation and outside counsel providing ESPN representation in regard to such litigation and other legal services, focusing principally on employment-related matters, but including others.
7. Assist with ESPN's sponsorship of foreign individuals for nonimmigrant and immigrant visas. Provide advice to designated departments on immigration-related matters.
8. Analyze workforce classification issues for compliance with applicable law and company guidelines.
9. Keep abreast of industry developments by reviewing trade journals and publications and by attendance at seminars and conventions.
10. Maintain membership in professional societies.
11. Perform such other duties or functions as the Assistant General Counsel or Vice President and Associate General Counsel may delegate to her or him.
Decisions Made: Determining acceptable or desirable legal consequences and interrelated business consequences for ESPN of proposed transactions and contract drafts.
Education: Law school graduate; bar admittee (preferably in Connecticut and/or secondarily New York)
Experience: 3 or more years of experience with employment, immigration and contract law, including extensive counseling and drafting experience; familiarity with entertainment, broadcast/cable communication, internet and/or sports business preferred.
