Position Description: Responsibilities include: • Directs on-air productions of live, remote sports events; plans and executes live remote sports events and related features; makes the on-the-spot decisions regarding what pictures and sounds will be broadcasted • Works with engineering technicians to plan for the elements that will comprise the live broadcast of each assigned sports events, including graphics, stillstore grabs, switcher effects, composite music • Plans and executes the capture of desired shots, live-to-tape builds and sequences of shots; plans for camera placements • Directs the technical crews and freelancers assigned to remote events; conducts production and technical meetings to define crew responsibilities and to outline expectations of the crew for any given live remote sports event • Provides post-event feedback and constructive criticism to assigned crew members • Conducts research on the teams, players, storylines, trends, etc. that relate to each assigned event • Provides instruction to on-air talent prior to telecasts and directs them, as required, during telecasts • Makes on the spot editorial adjustments to coverage patterns as unforeseen situations and opportunities arise • Trouble-shoots, on-the-spot, operational issues that arise during assigned live remote sports events • Operates within the context of the defined objectives and outcomes of each assigned live remote sports events and of the sports segment into which the event falls • Ensures that all commercials and promotions for all assigned productions are correctly inserted • Work is subject to after-the-fact review by the Coordinating Producer • Participates in the development of the concepts and content of assigned sports events to reach viewers and to increase market penetration and viewership • Plans for and achieves the execution of the creative concepts underlying assigned live remote sports events Required Qualifications: • Has good knowledge of the real-time sports directing processes • Has good understanding of the financial implications of directing live remote sports events • Has good knowledge of the technical equipment involved in directing live remote sports events • Typically has 4+ years of progressively complex related live sports event directing experience • Has in-depth live remote sports event directing skills • Has a good appreciation of popular culture, e.g., “what’s cool” and assists with defining the tastes of ERT’s and ESPN’s viewers • Has a good understanding of the market positioning and strategies of assigned sports events • Has a good knowledge of sports and sports history Apply Directly to this Company To apply for this position, apply directly through the company's website at ESPN Employment Opportunities . *This company prefers that all applicants come directly through their website.
