Position Description:
The General Editor will help shape online content for NHL and Olympic Sports coverage on ESPN.com. Work with Senior Coordinator of NHL and Olympic Sports on coverage plans and strategies to help drive more traffic to NHL and Olympics Sports sections. On a daily basis, work with Senior Coordinator and columnists and show an ability to ask writers fair and constructive questions to improve the overall presentation of stories and columns. Must have an understanding and appreciation of story play, including knowledge of NHL and Olympic Sports. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills, and work well with a variety of people in an office setting. The General Editor is a non-managing job, responsible for managing editorial content for the NHL and Olympic Sports sections. Alone or with other sources, the General Editor gathers content and coordinates coverage; works to expand and make coverage more comprehensive; generates story ideas; contributes to special features and stories and edits multiple stories, among other duties. The General Editor typically edits copy to meet established tone, theme accuracy, style and consistency requirements; writes copy; enhances existing material; contributes to making the site work and creating a positive experience for users of ESPN.com. The job may include responsibility for the daily content and regular "refreshes" of the NHL and Olympic Sports pages on ESPN.com. In the absence of a senior or deputy editor, the General Editor may be called upon to lead a group, shift or key coverage area of the site. Must possess excellent writing skills and background in HTML. Collaborate with ESPN.com news and copy desks to produce content that conforms to ESPN.com style and standards.

Required Qualifications:

    · Experience in online media content preparation required.
    · Must be able to edit, write and plan editorial content.
    · Must have a basic understanding of HTML and related web-authoring tools and software.
    · Strong English grammar and excellent organizational skills.
    · Familiarity with most major Internet search engines and fluency in electronic newsgathering techniques, including quickly navigating the Internet.
    · Should have a basic appreciation of popular culture, e.g., "what's cool" and contributes to an understanding of the tastes of ESPN.com's readers.

Desired Qualifications:

    · Prefer a BS/BA degree in communication arts, journalism or new media or equivalent combination of experience.
    · Prefer a minimum of 3 years experience in editorial assignments for traditional or new media.
    · Previous experience as a key decision-maker in a newsroom is a plus.
